I need a tree suggestion and I am hoping that you guys can help! I am zone 8 in Portland Oregon. This is what I am looking for-
Deciduous
Drought tolerant (it has to take full sun all day and I hate watering)
Not very messy (no sticky fruit, small berries okay)
Smaller 15-25 ft tall
No suckering! I have a black locust that I can't stand already : )
I really like
- interesting bark
- fall color
-little to no maintenance
I know it's a tall order. I am open to any and all suggestions. Thanks for any help you can give me.
I need tree suggestions!
Chionanthus retusus - Chinese Fringetree. It flowers and then produces blue berries in the fall, but birds take them readily so there is no mess. It has exfoliating bark and yellow fall color. There are two forms, a shrub form and a tree form. The tree form gets 20'-25'.
There are others, ( a ton of magnolia cultivars) but I'm hesitant to recommend any because some trees need help in a drought and all ( including the Fringetree) need regular moisture to get established.
I looked up some pictures of the fringe tree and it is very pretty.
Just so you know, I do want it drought tolerant but I am very willing to give it the water that it needs for the first year or two. The area that I am planting it is going to be a very low water area so I want to make sure I am not having to dump water on it for the rest of my life! It will also be on a slightly bermed area so that will probably decrease the overall water that is available to it until it has a mature root system.
It is said that the Chinese Fringetree is very drought tolerant once established. If you're willing to water the first year or so then this tree should fit your specs. It has spring flowers, berries, exfoliating bark and fall color. There aren't too many trees with four seasons of interest. As to availability of the tree form in your area I have no idea. You need the female to get berries too.
A little googling produced this:

Chinese Pistache is nice. It is drought tolerant, deciduous, and has gorgeous colors in the fall, and stays small (30 ft). I'll let you decide if the bark is interesting. They do have berries. Don't formally know about suckers, but I haven't seen any on mine. The tree doesn't have the same type of growth pattern a Black Locust does.

Good luck with your search.
You might consider Ironwood (Ostrya virginiana). It has all the characteristics you are looking for, well fall color is nice but not spectacular, plus it would easily tolerate the wet Pacific coast winters.
