I just bought and planted a Chicago Lustre viburnum to add to my little collection. Now I could use some advice on good pairings for it, as well as info on maximum distance from other viburnums to allow good fruiting and flowering.
The Chicago Lustre is about 30 feet from a hedge of arrowwood viburnums and the same distance from a Marie's Doublefile (single specimen) and a viburnum trilobum (also single specimen).
Thanks for any and all advice!
Need suggestions for companion viburnums
You should do a search on this forum for past postings about this very subject. There is so much good info already written, it isn't necessary to repeat it.
If the nearby arrowwood hedge is of a different clone than your Chicago Lustre (and it overlaps in bloom time) then there is no need to plant another arrowwood. If you just want more arrowwoods (hardly a bad thing), then I'd add any of the many selections made from the Chicagoland area. Take a look in PlantFiles to read up on the many worthy choices.
For flowering, distance from others doesn't come into play. Sun exposure (more = better) does. For fruiting, you'd have to be more than several hundred feet away and have no flying insects for that to be a problem. The usual issue is lack of overlapping bloom time or lack of appropriate paired pollinator. See past posts.
