Found outside my livingroom window, I'm in Newfoundland Canada.

This is a harmless (to humans) orb-weaving spider (family Araneidae) in the genus Araneus; possibly Araneus trifolium, a widespread species; see http://audilab.bmed.mcgill.ca/~funnell/photos/DSC03040_spider_dark_crop.jpg
Also, Araneus marmoreus can be very similar in appearance - see http://www.cirrusimage.com/Arachnid_marbled_orbweaver.htm and http://davesgarden.com/guides/bf/go/2083/ for some examples.
