What are your plans for the winter???

(Zone 4a)

I was just curious to know what everyone will be doing once the snow falls? Any big projects around the house? Spring planning for the gardens? Taking it easy?

We just finished a bathroom renovation that took almost 2 weeks. Why do home projects always last longer than you expected? Eeeeks!! This winter I also plan on repainting my dinning room/kitchen and possibly the Master Bedroom if I get the ambition. Oh yeah and I think I will take up yoga this winter as well......

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

I can't even think that far in advance yet. Hubby's been pretty busy with the biz so we can even make any far off plans unless it is another business project.
I know what you mean about home projects. The toilet in our laundry room was leaking so when hubby took the toilet off he figured we'd lay the new tile we had picked up last year, well if we're gonna lay new tile might as well paint before we do that, well then we'll need a new ceiling light and some shelves and a new curtain rod and curtain..... and of course when we pulled the washer and dryer out they needed new hoses.
I said "ya know the old sink and toilet are going to look real crappy" Hubby, of course, refused to change them, oh well.

Edited to add a missed word

Hahahaha I hear ya flowerjen.....Well when we started the project we figured it would be a weekend thing. However then we discovered mold so then half the ceiling had to be pulled down and replaced grrrrr!! Oh well we are really happy with it now so I won't complain.....

Here is the finished product if you are interested.....it is just a powder room for us so to speak - we didn't put in a shower or tub since the ceiling is pretty low.

Oh, Dawn that is just beautiful. It turned out wonderful. You should post it on HGTV rate my space. That's my next fav thing next to gardening, home decor. I wanted to become a stager before it got so popular.

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

I plan to hang around DG and read, take a walk a day if weather permits.
We gave up on the new kitchen.
O ne in college and the other will go next year. DD just couldnt defend the cost . We will get a new Gas cook top though and end the frustration of dealing with the one thats 20 years old.

Salem Cnty, NJ(Zone 7b)

Beautiful job, Dawn. Love the spotlight on the candle and the colors.

Spend more time with the DGKs is my winter plan.

WooHoo? March is only about 6 months away! :-{

Buffalo, NY(Zone 6a)

I know .... pretty pathetic .... huh?

:-)

(Zone 4a)

WNY that is a pretty big list....that should definitely keep you busy! I might try winter sowing again this year....it didn't work out all that great for me last year but I think I had the soil too wet.

Oh and WNY not pathetic at all....normally just after Christmas I start itching to do some gardening.

Fairfield County, CT(Zone 6b)

I decided to regrout some of my shower and re-caulk the tub. Took a whole week and boy was I glad to get a real shower instead of sponge baths. I bet my co-workers were glad, too.

I have a girlfriend from California visiting for a week in November and we are going to a hooked rug show at the Shelborne. She wants to take a duck tour in Boston and I'd like to see some of New England while I have time off. Then I am going to spend the winter catching up with my sleep, watching all the House episodes I am recording with my DVR and combing my long-haired cat. This is in addition to working and teaching two nights a week. Maybe I will try rug hooking again now that Wallingford is a bit older and (hopefully) won't pull out all the wool I put into the rugs. Mostly I want to stay warm!

Salem Cnty, NJ(Zone 7b)

I love House. He cracks me up.

I need to add that one of my winter plans is to learn how to take pictures and upload them. So watch out - some day when you least expect it there it will be. lol

AYC - what is the best way to clean a hooked rug? Hooking is a skill I'd like to learn also.

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

Willie the Monkey Flower - Shade Loving Hybrids... did fantastic here this year... I bought another pack of them when they were on sale... and collected some... not sure how they will turn out since they are a hybrid

put a dent in the ones listed in my jornal... still more to come

I think that I will hibernate.

Buffalo, NY(Zone 6a)

I have always like Monkey Flowers, a lot, but what I am really excited to plant and perpetuate are the mixed wildflower seeds from Alaska. So many, many seeds I don't recognize!

Most people don't want to hear about me enjoying winter with skiing, boarding, tobogganing and picnics in the park. They'd just rather complain "It's too cold!!"

It's nice to be able to enjoy the quiet serenity of nature, which parks can provide, once all the people leave. Plus, you get prime choice of picnic tables!!

Thumbnail by WNYwillieB

Yup choice of - animals, seats, trees, air, the scenery. ALL to yourself :-)

The Monadnock Region, NH(Zone 5a)

I'm not sure WHAT my winter plans may be. So far, DD and DSIL have decided that there's more hours in MY day than in theirs, so we have a new puppy ... who is almost housetrained!! And, we have a new woodstove, which I get to keep filled and running along with the wood furnace ... (they refuse to purchase oil this year!). And then, I still have the little grands to keep an eye on and the two that I provide day care for.

Still haven't got satellite hook-up yet, but REALLY want it so that I can work on my DG Journal without interruptions.

Other than that, I'm totally free!

Salem Cnty, NJ(Zone 7b)

LOL - "work on my DG journal w/o interruptions'. You just listed a whole paragraph of interruptions. That just tickled my funny bone.

Winter picnics sound wonderful. Years ago, my DH went camping with a boys group in the snow. He came back with stories of these boys climbing into their sleeping bags fully clothed and booted. Not in the tents, but close by the fire. Needless to say those bags were ruined. They had a lot of fun though, too.

Fairfield County, CT(Zone 6b)

Jan23 - the traditional way of cleaning a hooked rug is putting it face down in a drift of new snow. The lecture I attended Saturday said that that doesn't work. :( The speaker suggested letting stains dry then trying to take them off with a dry sponge. Vacuuming is fine and if the rug backing is fragile - cover the face with nylon net first, fastened down to prevent the vacuum sucking up the wool loops. One of the two rugs I have made has a polyseter backing so I can throw it in the washing machine. I would check with a textile conservator about cleaning a valuable rug - they are the experts.

Put the rug out on the clothes line for the winter. I am sure it wouldnt have any dust mites surviving..

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Nice bathroom, Dawn. Obviously the kids were kept away before the photo! No plans as of yet. I would like to do some projects in the house, but that depends how far the finances fall!

Salem Cnty, NJ(Zone 7b)

Thanks for the rug-cleaning info.

Truth - dust mites cant live freezing 24 hrs. I would not make it ummm 10 mins.

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

there are a lot of seed i can't identify in there Willie... do you know what the big pebble looking one on the left is?

Buffalo, NY(Zone 6a)

I know not.

I recognize like 5 of them .... HaHa .....

Hence my excitement for March to come already!!

They are special seeds.

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

the black and red one looks huge

can't wait to see what you have... is there a list of plants with the packs?

Buffalo, NY(Zone 6a)

Nope. No list .... a veritable potpourri of unknowns.

I thought that the big black and red one might be a castor bean, but I think those are black and brown, not red.

Should we start a contest like count the jelly beans in the jar guessing how many different flowers sprout out??

:-)

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

LOL... not a bad idea

you going to sow them in the garden... or inside?

Essex Junction, VT(Zone 4a)

Gosh, winter? I'm still trying to get through fall! :)

I don't have any plans except for spending some time with my husband after the election. That's if the election goes smoothly :) [he's a professional blogger who follows national politics...this cycle has been brutal]

So if all goes well, hopefully getting some stuff done around the house for once, and catching up on my gardening notes. Isn't that what we all plan to do? LOL

Dawn - How about you come to my house and tell me what we should do with it?! I'm not too bad with plants, but interior decorating kills me. Can't even decide on paint colors :(

(Zone 4a)

Evie I am not too good with colours either.....this time I lucked out. I always think I know what I want but then when I paint it I am like "gee that isn't the colour I was going for?" LOL!!! I did that with my dinning room when we moved in.....that is why 5 years later I want to repaint. Hopefully this time I will get the green I am envisioning.....

Buffalo, NY(Zone 6a)

I have been finding that lately I blink and it's already the next season.

Since I doubt I will have the patience to wait until it is safe to plant these outside, I am pretty sure I will be itching to start them by mid-March in the greenhouse which is already packed to the gills. So .......

Time to get creative and figure out some shelving, perhaps?? I can easily install some out from the openings on the second floor which overlook the GH, but the heat is pretty intesnse up in that area, so I fear they might fry. I can cover them with light gauze to protect them from the sun, I suppose. But, the heat ......

I usually start them on the cement floor, where their feet can stay cool and their growth can keep warm. Anyone know if that might be a preference? Roots cool, plant warm, for started seedings. I mean, I know they have those seedling heating mats to encourage sprouting, but ... after that ..... when they start to grow.

I will probably end up moving a select bunch of greenhouse plants into the house to make room for all the seedlings. I haven't even mentioned the veggie garden seeds I want to get started along with everything else.

Mid-Cape, MA(Zone 7a)

Oh, winter. . . about now, winter starts looking enticing, what with all the physical work of Fall garden-stuff I need/hope to get done before the snow falls. Dawn, your powder-room renovation was beautiful and inspiring. I am looking forward to those frigid inside-months when I will organize all the seeds I will be acquiring in five, count 'em FIVE, DG seed swaps that I have just signed up for (what was I THINKING?)

Hillsborough, NC(Zone 7b)

Hello - I live in the SE not the NorthEast but I hail from Upstate NY and grew up in Brooklyn and Queens --so can I join in?

I mostly don't have the long cold winter that you all do --but --- it is still 'down time' here in NC as far as the garden goes. I've netted the stream and I will have to blow off the leaves pretty regularly in case we have an ice storm (more common than snow) and it all gets too heavy for the netting. We have to paint the bedroom (there is a war about the colors... my husband likes the Restoration Hardware silver sage (green)---and I like a warmer tone). We have a new grandbaby coming - so there is that activity getting her room ready. I am going to take some cuttings and get them going. I am going to work on bowling balls and tempered glass. I am trying (TRYING) to learn all the stuff I need to learn about gluten free eating. I am going to make a memory box for the new granddaughter - (like a hope chest with folk art painting) (very primitive painting since I have NO talent) - incorporating things starting from when her parents met.. decopauge airline ticket from the proposal trip...the wedding invite... a silver charm from the favors I made for the rehearsal dinner..etc.. plus some painting of the first pet(s) I'll add to it as the years go by... and last - If I can - I am going to talk my husband into agreeing to a cork floor in the upstairs loft - the only room left with carpeting. If he does not agree --- I am going to pull the rug up and he can live on plywood until he see's the light. He may have a heart attack ---if he does and it kills him --- I will get the cork floor and new furniture too for up there!! snort!

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

Welcome rosie, as we always say here " everyone is northeast of somewhere"

"He may have a heart attack ---if he does and it kills him --- I will get the cork floor and new furniture too for up there!! snort! " too funny!!!!!

Hillsborough, NC(Zone 7b)

Well Jen - I am a believer of making lemonade when you are given lemons. (grin)

Salem Cnty, NJ(Zone 7b)

Still laughing at that one also, rosie. Yes, welcome.
Jan

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

very funny Rosie... and of course you are welcome here
