Magnolia kobus, Pruning?

Tokyo, Japan(Zone 10a)

Magnolia kobus. I have rather large specimen growing in my small garden here in Japan. It is over 20 feet tall with a similar spread.
Dilemma, this very healthy attractive tree has to be pruned! How and how much, when? I really don't want to loose it. Any advice is most
appreciated.

My understanding is that magnolias should be pruned in spring after they bloom. They set buds in the fall, so if you prune it now you risk losing your spring show. I pruned a magnolia 'Butterflies' in August and it does not seem to have suffered any ill effects, but it is also very young and has not yet bloomed for me. Last winter my father in law hired suspect gardeners who butchered a stellata by pruning it in December. It did come back this year but they "trimmed" most of the branches with flowers on it, so almost no show.

Elizabeth, thanks I will take your advice and prune in the spring after flowering. It makes good sense! I'm new to magnolias but always loved them I inherited this one when I bought my house last year along with a yard full of weeds and
an old diseased cherry that I had to remove. Now there's just bare dirt and the magnolia so I need some flower for the spring!
