CLOSED: What kind of spider is this? found in Palenque, Mexico

Astoria, NY

Hi there,

I was in Palenque, Mexico for vacations a few days ago and I found this spider in my room (a hut actually, in a kind of camping in the "jungle"...)

I was just wondering what kind of spider this is and if it is any dangerous...

Any idea?

Thanks!

This is a mygalomorph spider in the family Theraphosidae, they commonly are known as tarantulas. There are many species of these in Mexico, and I would hesitate to identify this one specifically. It might be in the genus Aphonopelma; see http://www.birdspiders.com/gallery/p.php/154 and http://picasaweb.google.com/sphwolf/OkieSpiders#5162513402731772082 for examples. They can deliver a deep and painful bite if mishandled, but their venom is not particularly dangerous to humans.
