Linda,
Somewhere I think I read the GPH uses the mistletoe that grows on oaks. The majority of our mesquite trees are full of mistletoe but I've never seen a GPH on one nor have I ever seen any caterpillars or chrysalids. BAMONA just says mistloe on various tree species. I continue to look for them on the mesquites here to no avail...sigh

DAILY BUTTERFLIES Page 49
The Dallas Lep. Soc. website www.dallasbutterflies.com/ just says mistletoe for the host plant.
"Great Purple Hairstreak (Atlides halesus): Mistletoe (Phoradendron tomentosum). "
Also, I let another Polydamas go. As I was walking out the back door I saw another kind of Swallowtail fly by - it was either a Palamedes or a Black ST but I couldn't tell as it was faded and flying away from me.
Mom said the Poly was back to lay eggs on the pipevine today. I thought it looked like there were more eggs on it than there were yesterday.

Lovely Mrs_Ed

Hi Carla...nice to see you posting here...but what is up with the color on that Monarch??
Always nice to see the GFs Lily!
Melanie....That is a great and interesting shot of the ZST molting, not something I will ever see in this area.
Ms. Ed ...nice shots as always! You really have to enter some of your photos in the contest. The info is posted on the home page today!

Oh thanks Shelia. You know, It's going to be hard to pick one since butterflies are all so pretttttyyyyy.

This isn't my photo but it really knocked my socks off. Anyone know what kind of swallowtail this is? And look at its body - it's red!

Great shots Linda!!
I had lots of visitors this week, will post some tomorrow...(really tired) yyyyawn! :-O
Debnes
ooooo, I want that Crimson rose...lol Can you import eggs from India???
Pretty Monarchs..sighhh.
Lily he looks like he's ready anytime to pupate
Elaine
Love that two-tailed tiger cub? Hmmm...if the adults are called tigers...does that make the caterpillars cubs? ROFL!!!
Awesome photo of that Indian Swallowtail Mellie! Colorful!!!
My Pink Spotted Hawkmoth started to pupate a couple of days ago. It was pretty much dormant at the bottom of the cage...but then started to shrink in size yesterday. It's still in the cocoon making process but here's a photo from earlier this evening.
The shed skin is off to the side. Both are Uhhhhhhhgly!!! :o)
By the way...forgot to respond to Thea's question about preparing for pupation. I don't use soil (although have used it before) but tear up a bunch of paper towels and put a layer of "fluff" on the bottom of the cage. Once the caterpillar forms a cocoon I'll clean out the dirty paper towels and put in a fresh layer of shredded pieces again and cover it up with more of the same. I've raised numerous moth cats that way and they all emerged just fine. Besides, I like being able to look in on them daily :o)

ps...it should pupate completely by tomorrow and change to a darker brown color.

ewww. That is ugly. but pretty cool too.
Cat, you are a mess. Tiger cubs.
That is a pretty --ugly moth baby.
Carla....I see now the wing edge was missing!
LL....Won't be long for the BST to pupate.
Cat....Very ugly stage of the Pink moth! LOL!
Linda...The Monarchs here have been holding on from the wind later in the day too!!
Melanie....beautiful red! Quick ID there Deb!
I had a first in my yard this week. A Pipevine blessed me with it's presence for about 10 minutes or more. It was mainly interested in Canna of all things.
Beautiful contrast of the PVST Sheila!!! Thanks for your reply on my EBST question. Indeed, I watched the little one wandering off to pupate yesterday. Smart little fella! It wandered into the thick of branches to hide and morphs.
