CLOSED: A butterfly hard to spot. Looks like a leaf.

San Andres, Peten, Guatemala

Even though they are hard to spot in the foliage when resting, especially sugar cane, they are often very tatty.

Several of these were in the garden today. The Mexican Sunflowers were the main attraction.

This one is very close to our Brimstone butterfly, must be in the same genus! They also like red flowers!

Yes Janet that is the one identical, It even has the two brown spots on the wings

I can't see any brown notches on the leading edge of the forewing on yours, otherwise there's not a lot of difference! Should really check to see if the Brimstone is in Guatemala.

Can't find it there!

The Brown spots are in the middle of the wings.

According to the experts they live in Europe, Asia and North Africa. I have searched everywhere.
Oh well, now they live in my garden in Guatemala. I must have a word with them and tell them to get their pretty little selves, back over the other side of the Atlantic.

Mind you I don't blame them for being here, the weather is a lot more pleasant than their usual haunt. Siberia ? yuk.

There's also some smaller brown notches at the top edge of the wing, so similar though. Are you sure you didn't bring it back after holidaying in Europe, lol.

We thought this was a Brimstone Gonepteryx Rhamni but they don't live in this part of the World.
That was a great site you gave us. Yes it is an Anteos Clorinde which does live here. Many thanks.

Nope, not quite, lol, those factors of the small brown notches on the leading edge and that it doesn't live there counted Brimstone out.

I found that site a few days ago, put it in my favourites. I was just searching for another species when AOL stopped responding, my favourites all of a sudden have more than allowed sites in it, lol, keeps changing from different (favourites) versions of AOL I've had and now it seems all of them are in there more than once but with the latest lot missing, LOL!! Good job I have some links here!
