the new Brom Palace

Navarre, FL(Zone 8b)

Hi Sue,
My Neoregelia 'Pemiento' came in today from 'Michael's Bromliad'. It looks great! I'm going to write a very good comment for his business. Just look at this. My husband is holding it while I took the picture.

Sue,
Do you have a picture of the outside of your 'Bromeliad Room'? I need to construct something simple to lightly overwinter plants. I don't need heavy expensive construction. I can't quite tell if yours is simple or heavy duty.

Coffs Harbour, Australia

Pam, that is an excellent buy! Well done!
The shade house is quite simple. It is made of Galvanised tube, and fitted together with the same clamps as used in Scaffold set ups. I have draped shade cloth over and secured it with cable ties. The shelves are galvanised mesh (the heavier guage the better) supported on full Besser blocks.
It took a bit of time to get it together, but worth the effort.
I also laid weedmat over the entire floor surface before topping up with about 5-10cm of aggregate.
This is it from outside. I couldn't get the same coloured shade cloth so used a piece of green until it becomes available again. I actually don't mind the green anyway.

That planmt is just fabulous! i would leave hime the best possible feedback you can. Lots of A++++++'s. I bet you'll purchase from hm again!
Heres a close up of the corner attachments, on the side where the green joins the cream cloth

This is the blocks and mesh, and the timber is decking timber held in place with wooden stakes. The poles of the shade house are buried about 4-500mm (20") but not cemented.
We had wild winds and a hail storm last week, and it all stood up to it very well. No damage in the shade house

Not so lucky in the garden!

Your shade house is very simple and so clever in the sturdy choice of galvanized pipe. I really like the way it was done. I would like to do something very similar, but I would use greenhouse plastic for winter. The use of tie wraps works great too, I see. I use them at work for wires. Your floor is sure good for weed control and drainage. I guess your real test came with that storm. (Poor garden, though) I'm glad all your hard work paid off so well. Your shelves will hold any number of plants you choose, indeed.
Thanks for the pictures. I appreciate you sharing.

No worries pam. the shelves are probly not all that strong, but the bromeliad mix is fairly light anyway, and I only water in the vases, so not really any heavy wet soil to contend with either.
I hope this info can help you with your plans to make something to house your collection.
I have bought a kind of fabric called solar weave, which is like a woven, waterproof cloth, that I will put up when we get our storm season, as it gets quite wet and humid here toward the end of summer, and things always rot! I flush the water in the vases, usually every 2 days, to keep the mossies from breeding, and I use tank water for that, so It won't hurt to exclude the rain for awhile.
It didn't tkae long to run out of room though!

Vriesea guttatta, about to bloom. Someone on another thread said they were hard to flower, but this one is proving as easy as any of the vrieseas?

What a collection of bromeliads you have. I enjoyed looking at each and every single one of them!

Thats great Clemen, my job is done then! I enjoy looking at them too, and have to try and limit myself so I don't spend too much time in there! I never get anything done! LOL

How do you get their babies to bloom??? I have quite a few bromeiliads and their babies, but cannot get them to bloom, any suggestions on how to do it???

Coffs Harbour, Australia

I think most need quite bright light to flower. Do you know what type you have? You could try placing the whole plant in a plastic bag with a ripe banana or apple for a few days. Apparently the gasses given off by the ripening fruit will encourage the plant to flower in 12-16 weeks.

Coffs Harbour, Australia

I got this one at a market last month for $7. I have split it up and got two mature plants with a pup each. This one flowered in the last couple of days.
Aechmea nudicaulis var. Flavomarginata (I think)

Unfortunately I do not know the names of them, but they are babies, don't they need to be a certain size to force them to bloom?? I actually have a baby of the one you just got for $7, good bargain. So when you cover them with the plastic bag, how many days do you do that for? Do you place them in the dark? I would appreciate your comments, your plants are so beautiful!

Coffs Harbour, Australia

I would leave them in the shade so they don't sweat in the bag, and maybe try 2 days, with a very ripe banana I reckon. I don't think they need to be in the dark though. Is it cooling down/warming up where you are?
Yes, they do need to be full size to flower, I presume. Have you got a camera to take some snaps?
I might be off line for a couple of days, but i will get back to you Clem!

Sue, thank you, I'll snap a few pics tomorrow and send along. i am in NY, close to the city, and oh well, the babies are indoor now, no more outside temps!

I am so sorry, forgot, will go now and take it!

Wow Clem, that last one is a beauty!
Your tree looks great, and so does your collection! I see the bottom one is variegated. And the one at the bottom with the paddle shaped flower looks like a tillandsia cyanea. Was the Paddle pink, with purple flowers?

Nassau County, NY(Zone 7a)

Yep, it was now it is green. All of those babies belong to their big mama's that i let die and they were all in full bloom before. So now I need to now how to make those beauties babies bloom!

Coffs Harbour, Australia

Time, I think Clem!
This is Gizmania cardinalis 'Broadview' The leaves are really bad looking due to it's prior treatment, but it is coming into flower, so hopefully I will get a pup or two.

Wow, weed woman, what a beautiful setup! Thanks for sharing your bromeliad oasis with us.

PamelaQ, that Neoregelia 'Pemiento' is gorgeous.

I like Maggie's Pride. Looks like a big one. Ann

Coffs Harbour, Australia

Sorry Anne, yes, the Neo. maggies pride is quite big, and upright compared to most Neos.
This is the Portea petropolitana var Extensa. I moved it away from the pool, as hubby was dripping pool water into it when emptying the leaf scoop!

Thumbnail by weed_woman
el arish, FNQ, Australia

Wow! I didn't realize they go bright yellow in full sun. You've inspired me to pull them out of the deep shade they're in and gradually bring them back into light. It's great you can buy a barerooted brom at the market and chuck it somewhere without potting up but bad when it's stuck there for a year! Ann

Coffs Harbour, Australia

Hi Ann, funny about the Portea going so lime. I've been looking around at others, some in partial sun, and they are nothing like the colour of mine, nor do they have such long leaves? I guess mine is just special! he, he. The man I bought it off said full sun, so full sun it has been. I wonder if it will green up a bit now it is away from the glaring hot sun by the pool?
Hows business?
Sue

el arish, FNQ, Australia

Sue, Business is good but it would be alot better if I spent less time forum surfing lol.
