Here in southwest Ohio, we've had an usually dry summer. The leaves on the maple trees are falling off brown, although we've had no frost yet. They are long established trees; however, is it recommended to water them under these conditions? By water, I mean letting a trickle run near the base for 2-4 hours. I read somewhere that dogwoods were sensitive to drought, so for sure we'll water that tree. Actually, Mom and I think we should water and my brother thinks it is not necessary or a good idea. What do you folks think? Thanks in advance!
Should you water Maple trees during a drought?
Yes it has been extremely dry, except for a passing hurricane or two. One good watering now will insure the tips of the roots will endure and be ready for spring.
Try a knocker or stationary sprinkler for at least an hour for penetration.
Roots grow out from the tree, so make sure water is delivered to the outer width of the maples. Watering next to the tree will do nothing.
Thanks - yes, when I said "base" I didn't really mean right next to the tree but good to clarify this in case someone else reads this.....
Extremely dry summer from the last week of July onward.
I got my water bill a couple of days ago, ugh!!
