Good shade plant combinations

Norristown, PA(Zone 6b)

Beautiful Gardens Jkom! It seems that there really aren't many true reds in many plants. I have Hydrangea Glowing Embers as well as several others labeled as red. The same is true of Hyacinths. At best they are a deep Rose or Fuschia. Your combinations and foliage are quite lovely.

Really beautiful jkom. And such abundance along with the color yet each plant seems to stand on it's own while being part of the composition.

This is giving me a serious case of zone envy. The gardens are just gorgeous.

Saint Paul, MN(Zone 4a)

Gorgeous gardens, jkom. What amazes me are the plants you have that I'm also growing up here in the north - Jack Frost Brunnera, Endless Summer hydrangea, Snow Angel Heuchera, the lamium - they all look more exotic and tropical in your pictures! Maybe I'd look better, too, if I moved south! Peg

That's a good one Peg!

My new shade garden plants are popping their heads up: Hosta, Astilbe, Rocket, Heuchera.......+ others I can't remember now ^_^

Isnt it fun?

I am envious of the plants coming up already! I never thought about this until I join this awsome site. I have used the phrase zone envy so many times! Mine are just starting to pop. Will post some photos when they are growing. GE I love your photos! Mine are now starting to fill in nicely also. The newer part of the yard is really pretty when all is open. I have some new trilliums that are now starting to bud. And many other new plants coming up. Several new hostas that I planted last fall. I haven't even seen them yet, and still can't LOL. Have a great wednesday. Ronna

Here's an early view of the shady garden with current blooms. Waiting for the beds and vines to fully develop in a month or so. Collage created with Google Picasa in case you're wondering.

Seabrook, SC(Zone 8b)

Wow. Lovely gardens. I've only recently started working on a shade garden, so it's nice to have some ideas.

Doss- I can't believe you can get lavender to grow next to hostas. I don't even try lavender anymore- I think if I even look at it in the store it starts to die.

I don't have much to share on this thread, but this is one combo I like- shell ginger and azalea.

Well finally I can post some picture here! Spring has finally sprung in our neck of the woods! Celadine popies, trilliums, and fading snow drops. Even a small red october hosta coming up. Ronna

Gardenlady: Can you tell me about your giant primroses? Do they last for many years? They are lovely -- but I've never grown them.

Plainwell, MI(Zone 5b)

I have had them for several years. I would say around 8-9 years. Gosh I hadn't thought of it in a while. But every year they multiply I have devided them several times. They never disappoint me. Every sping they pop up just beautifully. This area get some morning dappled sun. More now because no leaves yet. They do stay green all summer and will blossom later on also. Just not as hardily. I really love them. I have several of the smaller variety also. Ronna. But the pacific giants are my favorites.
