A dozen different spiders enjoy the hospitality of my house. This one prefers to live in the garden.

This is an orb-weaving spider (family Araneidae) in the genus Argiope - see http://nathistoc.bio.uci.edu/spiders/Argiope%20argentata.htm for images of the silver argiope, Argiope argentata, a species common in the southern USA. They are harmless to humans.
