My boyfriend took this photo at Red Rocks Park in Morrision Colorado. They were all over the place and were only feeding on the plant in this picture. It looked like a species of goldenrod that I might not be familiar with, the plant that is. They were about the size of an adult thumbnail and this one was a lighter colored variety. A few had more grey on them, those ones tended to be larger. He did not retract or 'curl back' his mouth piece which he was dipping all the way down into the flowers. Any ideas are appreciated, thanks!
CLOSED: Does ayone know what kind of insect this is?
Looks like a bee-fly, Bombilius species. It is actually a fly, I had some this year.
