This is one of my many types of bees. I have only noticed it once.
CLOSED: A bee with a black and white uniform
It's a fly. There are flies that look a lot like that in the family of Bee Flies, Bombyliidae, but I don't know if that's what it is.
Now I look at it again I can see that it is certainly not a bee. The striped jersey fooled me. It certainly is a bee fly as you said. There are similar examples in the database.
The striped jersey looks very much like that fungus, claypa. What do you think?
I don't know, but the fungus infected ones I've seen are either lethargic or dead.
