An orb-weaving spider (Family Araneidae); possibly in the genus Araneus - see http://www.pbase.com/tmurray74/orb_weavers_genus_araneus for some examples. All are harmless to humans.

Thank you! We have many of them around the house and with kids running around, I was a little concerned. I still don't think that I would want it crawling around on me!
