The baby pigeons are here!

(Zone 7b)

They hatched some time this morning.
Their parents are Black Winged German Shield Owls and are beautiful birds.
These babys eyes are still closed and they are tiny as you see but will double their birth weight in 48 hours.
Feeding hasn't occurred so they are less than and hour old as the parents feed them "Pigeon Milk" in the first hour.
You will notice that one is bigger than the other the reason being the hen lays the first egg then won't lay the second for 2 days.
This can be a problem if the bigger chick is stronger he could push the small one aside and it would get less food and not develope correctly.
Thats when i intervene and put in a second nest and the parents will feed both or if the big one is old enough i will put him on some straw on the bottom of the pen.
I usally don't have to do that but i thought the information might be interesting.
Here's a little known fact a baby pigeon will be fully mature and feeding itself in 35 days

I will post again in 1 week to let you see them grow that will be Oct. 3

Anybody got any good names for these ugly wugies

Hello Claire and Grow i put this up for you where are you??

Harmony-

Only just a hour old??? That is awesome. How about Milo and Otis. Edgar and Edith? Can you determine sex of the babies yet??

Sheila

Oxford, NS(Zone 5b)

Oh Harmony, they are just adorable. I love them both! I love the pic of the mom too, and of BC of course. I can't wait to see the change in a week. I cannot believe they double their birth weight in 48 hours. That is just amazing. The 35 days thing is amazing too. Oh, I am so excited to see the progress.

Names...names...well the parents are German owls, so I think they should get owly names, like "Snowy" or "Screech" or German names like "Frau" and "Schnapps." I like to have fun with the names. That's why I did that whole series of names with my new chicks - Nilla, Wafer, Shortbread, Butternut, Praline and Biscotti.

Here's little new pigeons mom.

I waited a year for a man to trade with me for a pair of these their my new breeding project.

Pigeons feel very comfortable and safe here i've only had these only 3 weeks and they already have babys.

Here's Dad and you see the color on his wings just isn't right I'm going to breed these with light brown wing owls and see if i can smooth out the colors. My goal is to produce a yellow winged shield Owl

Nobody has come to see the new baby :(

Hi Harmony! I have just come in from coop building. Been in the outbuilding all afternoon. It was hot so I came to get a cold drink. LOVE the babies - they really do look bigger today. New little beige wing owl is precious and sweet - and so is his mom. They are just gorgeous birds. I can't wait to see him grow up too. Can you tell the sex at this age already? I am trying to think of a good name but am too overwhelmed with his cuteness. Maybe you should call him Peace. Then you'll be Peace and Harmony. :-)

(Zone 7b)

I love the name peace and i think i'll name him that and i won't be able to tell the sex until he/she is about 4 to 6 months old. These birds are hard to sex and the only way is when they reach sexual maturity and the male does his dance.

I'm sorry i have been lurking and looking but not acknowledging. My bad! The babies are cute! I have always wanted doves or pigeons. I love the coo sounds. I can't decide if I want finches or doves. I plan on keeping them in a nice iron cage inside once I decide.

Clarkson, KY

Amazing pics! Just got time to look on DG, finally!! Those two should have really gorgeous names but, not knowing gender for months.....that's hard. Beauregard and Natasha?! Beauregard for his lovely eyes and Natasha for her flowing blond tresses....

(Zone 7b)

I have got to get a over 48 hour pic here they have grown since this last one.
Okay Grow Beauregard and Natasha if i can remember the names LOL

the dove i hatched is a spotted turtle neck dove or a spotted tutle dove for short
i still dont know if it will survive because hand feeding is very hard but easy at the same time it all depends on the chick if it wants to make it hard or easy.

and i forgot one little thing.i forgot when to start feeding them i think it is next day but i am not sure so i am keeping an eye on its stomach and when it goes down and the yolk dosnt bulge i will feed it.i think

Social Circle, GA(Zone 8a)

May I ask a stupid question? What is the difference between a dove and a pigeon? I have a pair of ....something that I'm not sure of. They say they are doves (wild) but they look like pigeons to me.

(Zone 7b)

Lucky My doves feed thier baby in the first 2 hours after thier birth.

londonderry, Australia

well i better get right on it huh
