Does anyone know what kind of butterfly this is? Maybe some kind of crescent?

Not a crescent, but in the same family (Nymphalidae). It appears to be an American Lady butterfly, Vanessa virginiensis - see http://www.nearctica.com/butter/plate17/Vvirgin.htm
It can be difficult to differentiate from the closely related painted Lady, Vanessa cardui - see http://www.nearctica.com/butter/plate17/Vcardui.htm
