Katydid Common Name & Family

Lincoln, United Kingdom(Zone 8a)

Hi Ken,

I have just added pics to Meconema thalassinum. The Common Name has been put as simply 'Katydid' but the name is 'Oak Bush Cricket' for the UK, and in Wiki it states 'drumming katydid' for the US.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Meconema_thalassinum

bioimages has it placed in the Family MECONEMATIDAE,

http://www.bioimages.org.uk/HTML/T128459.HTM

Wiki has it placed in Tettigoniidae, which the entry here is in also.

Which is correct?

This site seems to have placed it in MECONEMATIDAE:

And this,

We might need another family? :)

Thanks.

Janet,
that is a difficult one. I checked BugGuide.net as well as the sites you linked to above. BugGuide also has it in Tettigoniidae, but then lists a sub-family as Meconematinae.
It seems that America still uses Tettigoniidae and Europe has elevated it to a new family as Meconematidae.

Being a lumper rather than a splitter myself, I am inclined to leave it as Tettigoniidae for the present.

I have added the common names that you requested,

Perhaps you would like to add a comment to the entry regarding the use of the two different family names,

Ken

Thanks Ken, I will do that.
