Caladiums

San Diego, CA(Zone 10b)

Hi guys! This is my first year growing fancy Caladiums and I am so hooked...I wanted to order some more but is it too late? Or in my zone 10 it doesn't really matter, does anyone here know? Thanks!

I would say your too late, my caladium are starting to wind down for this summer. If you were to order bulbs you would not be able to start them until next spring. All the folks I buy my bulbs from would not ship until January.

yep, you're right, after I posted this I realized no one is shipping anymore! But you leave them in the ground right?

Roberta,

I am also in Zone 10 and love Caladiums. I can't leave these in the ground as they will rot with the winter rains, etc. I dig them up and put them in a cardboard box in peat moss or vermiculite. I just found out this summer, from a DG friend, that they put all their bulbs to store in the vermiculite. They said it works better than the peat moss. If you need to keep their colors in order, then place each or several in an old pantyhose or the netting from your potatoes, onions , etc. Place a piece of paper with the color in each selection. After you dig them up, let them dry for several days before storing them. Place the box in the garage in a cool place.

I also do this with my tuberose begonias as they will rot if kept wet over the winter.

I hope this info helps.

Wow, I had not idea there was SOMETHING I needed to dig out! How naive! What temps do you get in the winter in Huntington Beach? Our lows in San diego are in the mid 40s to 50s...
