Has anyone had luck doing this? My boss has a beautiful crape myrtle and it's got seed pods. I would love to grow some from seed. Hoping there is someone out there who's had luck!
Starting crape myrtle from seed?
I don't always cut off all my crepe myrtles seeds, and sometimes they just fall to the ground. Usually in spring, I have lots of sprouts from those fallen seeds.
I'd imagine, they would be very easy for you, if you immitate that same thing...sow in fall, and sprout in Spring.
Just remember not to plant deeply. They should be just under the surface of the soil, and barely covered.
If you want them to be exactly the same color, you may want to try rooting the sucker sprouts from the base of the tree. Seeds can sprout various colors similar, but not exactly like the mother tree
thanks!
I winter sowed crape myrtle seeds four years ago. One germinated. Last year I thought I had "lost" it to the winter. I even "tugged" on it to pull it up. I left it go for a week or two and it started to get leaves. I thought it would never bloom for me, but it started blooming a week ago.
You can grow them from seeds.

Thanks for the info Don. I'm hoping to get some seed from my bosses bush and sow it and see what happens.

Wait for the pods to turn brown pushing black or tie a knee high pantyhose over the pods to catch the seeds. they grow great from seed. Cuttings too if you feel adventurous.

Thanks so much Dave! I like to experiment with cuttings, so maybe I"ll do that too.

Seeds grow like weeds in my neck of the woods. One problem is they don't come true from seed or at least most won't.
I don't nothing for the seeds and end up pulling up seedlings every year so they can be hard to grow. My ground temp never gets under about 55 degrees.
