Our CA Landscaping-overgrowth

OC, CA & Twin Lakes , IA(Zone 4b)

After staying home in Iowa for the summer, I am now back to traveling to CA once per month.

This is the banana that I chopped down in June; it was 10 feet tall and had been wrecked by frost. I gave some pups to Weegy at round-up and wonder if they made the transition.

As you can see, there are three or 4 more pups that are now about 4 feet tall. It seems that it can be contained by just chopping them out when they become unmanageable as opposed to digging the whole thing out.

When the frost hit them I asked JD if I should just remove the whole thing and he said to just wait.

Here are the new plumeria that I planted in June. They are getting a good start and eventually will make the front of the house look better as there has been nothing planted there for some time.

Here is the plumeria in the backyard that just blew me away when I saw it. It has grown so much in three months. Amazing that the little sticks in the ground (previous photo) will look like this some day.

I would like your advice:

Should I just cut this back hard to help contain it?

Or do I not have enough space to be growing plumeria in that planter? Several times the high winds have broken them off because they are not staked but you see they come back even better.

It has such a big bloom and such pretty flowers, I hate to give it up.

Now on to the tropical hibiscus . . .that planter is the length of the pool and now is so full, I will have to pull out some of the hibiscus along there. I have kept them pruned to about 4 feet high.

My daughter sucessfully grew some wonderful heirloom tomatoes amidst all that. I will be taking out some of the hibiscus so she has more room for the tomatoes as she intends to continue to grow them.

Here is one that has to come out. They will dig easily as that soil was redone a few years ago.

Back to the front yard; these areas are just packed with hibiscus and some are 3 of the same flower, so I can pull the extras and just keep the remaining ones pruned. Plus the variegated bouganvilla (sp) from Logee's has to go.

It is very low in the left of the picture. Too bad it has to go; it is called something like "Apple Blossum" and has a pale flower with pink on the edges.

And whoever saw shrimp plants 4 feet tall. They are easy to manage; I just cut them down to about 6 inches and they come back up and bloom pretty again.

You must have had an awesome summer for things to grow so well.

Here is a Sago Palm that must be dumped. I had 3 in large pots for years and they were contained. I moved them into the ground because they suffered from DD not watering them consistently. Now they are becoming monsters!

If any of you can suggest someone I can hire to do the work please Dmail me. J.D. has done some work for me in the past but he seems to be just too busy to take on something like this.

Would like to have someone lined up to do it when I come back in October. This trip is reserved for cleaning junk out of the garage.

I am going to take off now to do some errands for other projects and to have lunch with Donna and Kathleen but will be checking back in tonight for your comments.

Thanks,
Arlene

I forgot to add that if any of you want these plants you are welcome to them if you can dig them. With the tear in the tendon in my foot I am unable to dig them.

How pretty everything looks, Arlene! Yes, it was a great year for gardens.
