This appears to be a larva of the American dagger moth, Acronicta american (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) - see http://davesgarden.com/guides/bf/go/957/

I looked up a picture of the American dagger moth, and we have tons of those! I think I have a photo of the adult somewhere. If I can find it, I will post for a positive ID and add to the BugFiles.
