CLOSED: What kind of spider is this and what is he guarding?

Blounts Creek, NC

This spider and his cocoonlike hard-looking (not gonna touch it, no sir!) thing are on a leaf of a tomato plant we have let the hornworms have for the year. I've looked and looked at pictures but can't pin it down.

This is a female lynx spider (family Oxyopidae); specifically, it appears to be a green lynx spider (Peucetia viridans) - see http://www.carolinanature.com/spiders/greenlynxspider.html. She is guarding her egg sac. These spiders are active hunters that do not spin a capture web, and are harmless to humans.
