This male hoverfly has similarities with Eristalis horticola and E. pentinax, but is not convincing enough..

Sorry, I don't have an ID for you, but just wanted to comment on the wonderful photos you took!

It looks a little like a male Eristalis arbustorum (see http://www.treknature.com/gallery/photo174396.htm) and http://www.bugsandweeds.co.uk/hoverflies/eristalis%20arbustorum.jpg

I agree, it is a male Eristalis arbustorum. Nice pics! I've had a couple around recently too, must be a late hatching.

Thanks Kywood!
Thank you Suunto and Wallaby! It looks identical to the picture of the 'bugs and weeds' site apart that the colour of mine is a more lively orange. I suppose the picture from the 'treknature' site is a female as the black bands on the abdomen are not exactly alike the ones on the male, the male also looks more hairy.

The colour is brighter when they are freshly hatched, and the hairs show better with a larger pic and with sun shining through. Yes, the pic on Treknature is a female, they do have less marking.

I see, thanks!
