Mites?

Dighton, MA

I think I have a problem with mites. Some of my chickens have a red but (round that area) I have looked really close and kinda rubbed it. I saw alot of dry skin and one very small white looking like a mite. On another chicken I saw brownish color mite thing near her feathers. (small) I have redkote, but do not know when to apply if you could help I would love to hear it!

I use vaseline around their vent if they have mites near the vent. It smothers them and kills them. Otherwise, I use permethrin dust which I bought from Randall Burkey company. There are other products. Some people use Sevin dust, which you can also use in your garden, but it is very toxic and I will not use it on my birds. Permethrin is milder and just as effective.

I love randall burkey. They also have a permethrin dip which i like because the liquid really lets all over. Its only $10 and you dilute it so one bottle will last forever.

Oxford, NS(Zone 5b)

They do really fast shipping. I was impressed with my order from them. Will keep the drip in mind. Hopefully I won't need it. I got 5 hens that were infested. I think they are better now.

Fritch, TX(Zone 6b)

soem even use DE. also there is a spray from Meyer hatchery that is mineral based.

both htings you found were the same thing at different stages of development. if they were long and worm liek, they are lice. have legs like tiny spiders, then mites...

good luck,

I use a pile of wood ashes in the chicken run for them to dust bathe in (t's an ooooold remedy), then I completely cleaned out the coop and pressure washed it down with soap and mild bleach solution. The mites never came back. I try to keep things as pesticide free as I can, but if it didn't work, I certainly would have resorted to chemical.

Dighton, MA

I saw alot of a light brown color. near her rear end. My mom thinks their blood mites, but she said shes does not know because they were feeding during the day.

Oxford, NS(Zone 5b)

sounds like mites to me....maybe too many for the vaseline trick. Might need to proceed to dust. Check their neck feathers carefully. That is usually where I find them if they have progressed beyond the vent area. On the skin at the base of the neck feathers...

Dighton, MA

I saw a couple of mites on her tips near her neak, but nothing compared to her rear. I saw alot in one small area like 12 and redness around her feathers. I saw some dry skin to.

Oxford, NS(Zone 5b)

I got 3 OEGs at the state fair and all 3 of them had bad mites on their vents. I gave all three the vaseline around the vent treatment for about a week, every morning. Then I waited a week and repeated. I haven't seen any on them since.

My Polish crested from another farm had them on vent, neck, and chest. I tried the vaseline on her but it didn't work completely. I had to get the lice/mite dust for her from Randall Burkey. Now she has none.

Is there anything that I should do to my coop inorder to get rid of them? What kind of bedding? Nesting boxes for bedding?

Oxford, NS(Zone 5b)

I'd probably use food grade diatomaceous earth in the coop litter area, nest boxes, dust bath areas. It tears open the carapace of the mites and kills them.

Clarkson, KY

TF's diatomaceous earth suggestion has potential. Mixing it in with shavings, maybe?

Dighton, MA

Ok. More on a long term what would you recommend for bedding?

Oxford, NS(Zone 5b)

I think a lot of folks use pine shavings to deter mites over the longer term. Others will surely chime in...

Clarkson, KY

We use straw...nothing special

Dighton, MA

I have an 8'' by 10'' coop 8 fit tall that I have to fill!

franklin county, MA

I hope you mean 8' by 10' LOL.

Dighton, MA

: ] you got me.

Clarkson, KY

Any sawmills or pine forests close by?

Williamsburg, MI(Zone 4b)

I can get a bale of pine shavings at the feed store for about seven bucks, I use one to fill my 6x10 coop. Make sure you scrub or treat the coop first or you will just be giving the mites a clean place to hide.

Dighton, MA

I buy White Pine Shaving. But I jsut want to know what people use and or recommend. What about those nesting box things that is like rubber or I don't know but it helps with the mess.

Dighton, MA

Yes, this weekend me and my mom are going to scub out the coop with water and dish soap. Then use some dust stuff. My moms a Vet she knows alot.

franklin county, MA

What are you going to be looking for to fill the coop? Anything speial? Have you posted pics of the coop yet?

Dighton, MA

I usually fill it with white pine shavings. I will get some pictures up later today.

franklin county, MA

I meant what kind of chickens silly, LOL But i do want to see your coop.

Dighton, MA

oh ahaha heavy breeds, RIR, Barred Rocks, a couple of Buffs!

Fritch, TX(Zone 6b)

for long term, you need to prevent. deter. keep poop cleaned up by deocmposing it. add dried chamomile and bay leaves to your bedding, and stir it often. keep it deep.

grow some palnts aorudn the coop with fragrances. mints, ajuga ground covers. artemesias. garlic. onion. parsley. thyme.

all of these [except the gorund cover] have properties of deterring parasitic pests. and if the chickens need to they will eat some of it, which will lhelp with internal parasites.

also anywhre around the coop that the ground is a little low, sweep in the exxtra hay or grass clippings.

the stuff from Meyer Hatchery is something you can spray in the nesting boxes and on the walls and floor when you clean it out. no chemcials, just ensymes...

Dighton, MA

Thanks for the help! I have 15 hens, and two roosters small roosters. One little baby, but I am looking for some Slkies and more heavy breeds at a chick age.

Dighton, MA

Do you recommend buying chicks from Meyer Hatchery?

Dighton, MA

Bantam White Leghorns two roosters and one hen. Anyone interested? They were raised by chicks pure breed.

I had very good luck with Meyer--they sell the special small order, right? I got 6 pullets and they threw in a 7th and it was a pullet too. Very healthy and nice temperaments.

franklin county, MA

randall burkey offers poultry now. They have a huge selection. Are you planning on buying chicks now? would you be interested in a few black silkie chicks? I know somone that is going to be putting some eggs in the incubator any day now......so if they all develop, i think she plans on selling a few. If you have not gotten your silkies in 3 weeks, let me know your still looking and i can pass your contact info along to her.

Oxford, NS(Zone 5b)

You should put those roos in the roosters for adoption thread!

Dighton, MA

I am looking for some chicks yes.

Hey All, I'm not even close to being a "know-it-all"; however .... I am in an internet Poultry Group hosted by Yahoo ... Barry Koffler ...who owns FEATHERSITE.COM moderates and is a significant contributor. The DE discussion got so out of hand recently that the just said no more. There were people leaving because of the repetition of endorsement (without any factual or scientific endorsement). There are many who say they love to use DE. There is no denying poultry need to dust themselves. The dusting is a means of removing mites. Sand works too as well as several variations of dirt composition. The life of a chicken is kinda short. The use of the chemical Permethrin dust seems to be the most widely accepted means of getting rid of mites. Poultry in an ideal setting would be able to dust themselves and basically help rid themselves of mites. The supermajority opinion seemed to be that Permethrin is not at all bad ... some (like me) use IVERMECTIN applied with Q-tip. It is strong ... made to kill parasites in livestock. One of those 2 chemicals are used by the Pros who raise the very best of the best.

But maybe not so much interested in eating the eggs?

(Zone 7b)

Cemba yes i love the white leg horns i wish i had those {{{{DROOLING}}}}{{{WHINEING}}}}
