What is this spider doing? Does anybody know what kind it is? He was just sitting there on the stump waiting for his picture to be taken

Appears to be a wolf spider (family Lycosidae).

It also appears that it's backside is split open....
Looks like a "brown ooze" is pouring out from the top side of it's abdomen....
So, it may be dying....

Yup. I'd say it's dying.
Maybe a bird took a swipe at it.
