Autumn Gardens

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

Are you guys talking rice and beans? A lot of people I know say "oh, yeah, rice & beans, you know" but no one will give me a RECIPE and I don't know how to do it, although I think we'd probably enjoy them!

And thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, Clemen!

S of Lake Ontario, NY(Zone 6a)

Clem, I made your rice and beans Tuesday night, and they were soooo good. I actually ate the leftovers for breakfast this morning!
And I shared the recipe with a co-worker, and told her where it came from.
Thanks again!
I'm sure Clem will let anyone know her secret!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Okay - let's hear it Clem. I make a pretty good one myself - for a Gringo! (Of course I learned it from my wife.)

Nassau County, NY(Zone 7a)

That is going to cost you much, hee hee. The secret is also the spices, right Debilu, do you still have some left?

S of Lake Ontario, NY(Zone 6a)

Yes I do, thank you!!

Nassau County, NY(Zone 7a)

So lets keep Vic under suspense, hee hee, if he doesn't give a recipe, you or me either! LOL

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

I would have have to get esposa's permission.

Nassau County, NY(Zone 7a)

you are craking me up! I thought it was your recipe

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

The rice and bean recipe on the Goya can of Black beans is really good.

Nassau County, NY(Zone 7a)

No no no, that is not the secret! This is family secret from Central America

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

Thanks Jen, if I can't get Clem's family secret recipe, I'll try that one! ^_^

Nassau County, NY(Zone 7a)

Debilu, should we??? lol, soon d mail me Carrie

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

NO DONT dmail.
I want the recipe too. SIL likes a hearty meal at night and sometimes when my casserole is big enough, I leave leftovers for them.

I just love the autumn colours!! So vivid and pretty!!

The Monadnock Region, NH(Zone 5a)

The colors really sprang forth this weekend.
(Is 'sprang' a word? Tee Hee!!)

Salem Cnty, NJ(Zone 7b)

It is now!! It is a perfect word. We knew just what you meant.

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

Sprang? Sure, I mean yeah, it's a genuine word AND we knew what you meant!

Nassau County, NY(Zone 7a)

Hey guys I make up words all of the time, I like that new one for me, SPRANG!

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

Spring, sprang, sprung. It's one of those odd irregular verbs we have. The burglar sprang out from behind the tree where he had been hiding. It sounds weird, though. But you wouldn't say "springed", right? The burglar springed out from behind the tree where he had been hiding. Most of us would just say JUMPED or blossomed, or, to use Candyce's sentence:

The colors really became more visible this weekend.

The colors really jumped out at me this weekend.

I like using words like SPRANG, because in a few generations, kids will need dictionaries to translate words like that! Let's use them while we have the chance, Candyce!

Mid-Cape, MA(Zone 7a)

To make myself feel better about what I perceived as the "Fall decline" in my garden, I decided to create a flower-bed around my mailbox last week. It helped! (And I'm reseeding parts of the lawn, to focus mentally on Spring!)

Very nice Emily! Now what do you recommend for the fall decline in my finances?!!

Mid-Cape, MA(Zone 7a)

Oh Victor, I'm the wrong person to ask, since "raising my spirits" this Fall seems to involve lowering my bank-account by visiting my local plant nursery!
Today I've decided to be out in the garden MORE and to be inside listening to the TV pundits LESS--at least this week and maybe forever!

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

Emily, won't the local fauna nibble at the lovely pumpkin and squash? Very pretty display, though.

Mid-Cape, MA(Zone 7a)

Hi Carrie! You're correct; I bet I will see some nibbles. From my experience last year with a few pumpkins around my mailbox, the squirrels (or SOMEthing; I'm not accusing my mail-carrier LOL) made a valiant attempt to tunnel into my jack o' lanterns. But they didn't get too far. . . we shall see what happens this year!

South Hamilton, MA

Didn't know that mail carriers could tunnel. Maybe they can have a contest on how far to insert the mail.

Mid-Cape, MA(Zone 7a)

LOL Iris. . . "neither snow, nor sleet, nor hail, nor. . . pumpkins?" Must be the chipmunk's oath.

The Monadnock Region, NH(Zone 5a)

I've seen bluejays do a pretty good job at tunneling a pumpkin! They do love those big, juicy seeds on the inside.

In the meantime, I shall use 'sprang' whenever I can. Thanks for the vote of confidence all!

South Hamilton, MA

How about 'sprang from the head a Zeus' as a classical reference.

The Monadnock Region, NH(Zone 5a)

absolutely!

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

Don't forget to use sprung evry once in a while too! Things spring leaks, and my tire sprang a leak last week, and oh dear, I think it has sprung another one! Terrible sentence, but a perfectly good word.

The Monadnock Region, NH(Zone 5a)

OK. How's this?

My garden has sprung so many weeds this season that I haven't been able to keep up with them, and I will be so embarrassed when everyone comes for RU!

^_^

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

nothing to be embarrassed about... just tell everyone you are going for the green way of living and the natural look

The Monadnock Region, NH(Zone 5a)

Good one, Allison! I just might do that!
