Autumn Gardens

New Boston, NH

In past years I found my self unhappy with the garden come fall as it loses it spring vitality and freshness but this year I have been able to accept it as the garden in the Fall,of couse their is still alot in bloom still and thinking of the long winter ahead the garden is beautiful.

You know, I actually think my garden looks best in Fall. With the hibiscus, callicarpa, anemone and variegated obedient plant just coming into bloom.

Fairfield County, CT(Zone 6b)

My cabbage and collards are looking good. Too bad I couldn't get any kale this year. :( Soon the mums will be blooming and then the saffron crocus will sprout from the creeping thyme. The lavendar is throwing out another round of blooms.

S of Lake Ontario, NY(Zone 6a)

I meant to buy some saffron crocus this year, but failed!

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

Your lavender is? Did you cut back the first set? I just sat there slack-jawed, amazed that it had bloomed at all!

I want to invest heavily in anemones. I love my asters - I always forget which color is where, and then have nice surprises!! I also love chrysanthemum Sheffield pink.

I rejoice in the colors of fall, and sulk in the whites of winter.

Fall is a wonderful time in nature and in my garden. I have always designed with fall color and bloom in mind. Too many just think of flowers and spring and summer. For me, with my limited space, plants have to offer at least two seasons of interest, and preferably three or four.

Fall is mush more spectacular than spring because the spring blooms are staggered over an extended period. In fall, the scale is much bigger because so many trees and shrubs show their color at roughly the same time. I find fall absolutely breathtaking.

Yeah fall is breath taking as you pack your summer clothes and pull out your heavies.

S of Lake Ontario, NY(Zone 6a)

Heehee. Fall is my favorite too.

Great topic to bring up, Peter. I find myself just standing out in my fall garden, musing about it. . . things are still quite lush (some would say needing some radical trimming PDQ--LOL) You're right, Victor, it all seems to be happening at once. It's weird; I almost don't want to look at all the beauty 'cause I know it's passing. I need to get over this!!

This was taken Sat. here in Maine.....fall is here already.

Is it unusually early, Celeste?

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Yes Victor, by a few weeks I would guess. This area got a lot of rain so it's not drought/stress related. Unless too much water can do this too?

Ninny here. What is PDQ?

Fall and spring mean a lot of work in the garden - pruning and cleaning up the beds. We have some nice fall foliage in the yard though - still prefer spring to fall overall. Attached is a pic from last fall early in the morning with a red sunrise. this maple is starting to turn now - it's colors never disappoint.

The other beautiful thing about fall in the garden, as wha's photo points out, is the color of the light. The sun is a glorious golden color, and when the sky is blue and the afternoon is waning, the garden is beautiful... well, maybe not MY garden, but gardens in general, lol!

Sugar maple, Bill? Long time no see, Dee.^_^

Hi Victor! Been very busy! I skim through the threads often, but haven't posted much. An unusual thing, when I don't have much to say, lol!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

I'm sure you can add to the conversation! Please post more often. (Hopefully before someone starts a Winter Gardens thread!)

I still like Spring better, fall comes and everything starts to look tired and then the big clean up, yikes!

Long Island, NY(Zone 6b)

Spring and Fall are my two favorites when it comes to temperature. All seasons are magical in their own ways.

Fall - I start thinking of the spring and what I want to plant. I enjoy collecting seeds. There seems to be a mini re-birth with the heat gone. My dahlia's kick in and the flowers change abit with the cooler temps. There are so many beautiful fall blooms. The changing color of the trees.

One thing I absolutely love in the fall is when the hydrangeas change the color of their flowers to red!

LOL, Victor ... 'fall is mush'!! I caught that, and thought, yeah! Fall can be 'mush'! We've already had a couple of frost advisories, but luckily, so far no frost.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

S of Lake Ontario, NY(Zone 6a)

Not yet I haven't, but you are absolutely right, it is getting cool enough to start cooking like that again. I was just thinking about making rice and beans last night! This week for sure, and I'll have to let you know if I do better this time.
I've sent echoes before too, heehee!
