This caterpillar is about an inch and a half in length, the only one on the plant. Can anybody please tell me if this is a butterfly caterpillar? Thanks!
CLOSED: caterpillar on Joe Pye Weed
This is a caterpillar of a moth in the family Arctiidae, possibly a saltmarsh caterpillar (Estigmene acrea) - see http://www.biosurvey.ou.edu/okwild/misc/smcat.html for an image. These caterpillars show wide variation in coloration, from very pale to nearly black.
Thank you for the reply. I looked again yesterday evening, but it wasn't on the plant any more. Maybe a bird had got him :-(
