Pirl's great idea

Emily - for the post above on 9/19 at 8:26 I used a paint pen and they do last over winter - more than one winter. I have no winter experience with the Deco Color pens but I bought a dozen in black believing the words of Tony Avent, the hosta hybridizer, who uses them and said they last even in water.

I would not use them on Venetian blind markers.

Good work, Kassia!

Look what I found yesterday! It made me think of you....

A reblooming iris! Isn't that such a nice surprise in late September?

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Another advantage of the stones (not rocks - hee hee), is that they serve as nice headstones if the plant does not return!

S of Lake Ontario, NY(Zone 6a)

Heehee, I wonder how much I have had not return that I just forgot I had...

Questa, NM(Zone 5b)

Nice Kassia!!

Thanks, Arlene--I shall go find some of these to make my plant tomb-stones, er, I mean markers. (Unfortunately, in my case that isn't all THAT unusual LOL)
Here's something I just discovered today--Like Kassia's, a surprise.

I think before we gardeners pass into the next realm, we may have to face all the plants we've killed!

(Zone 4a)

Great ideas Pirl!!!!

Framingham, MA(Zone 6a)

oh Victor you are so scary!!!! I can just imagine all the plants I killed coming after me!!!! and in your case all the morning glory vines you killed! oh you are in trouble!!!!

such a nice surprise!!! oh love that purple gladiolas... hey do you dig that up???

Arlene, I don't think that one bloomed this year yet... actually I planted in April when I divided the big clumps I had... but what I did is I found every clump I planted last spring and divided them again and planted around the edges so hopefully next year I will have more in Sept!!!! I think the iris season is soo short! I miss them! lol...

Guess what.
I bought a new Nikon S210 better zoom and LED screen is really much bigger, great for bad eyes.
Battery is charging so I'll take pics when ready.

Framingham, MA(Zone 6a)

Good for you!!!! I love NIkons... next year I am going for a new camera.... my roses deserve it!

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

yeahhhhh.

Framingham, MA(Zone 6a)

what do you do if your handwriting is similiar to a doctor's script? who's to know what the heck it says?

S of Lake Ontario, NY(Zone 6a)

hire pirl?

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

I guess you would select another way to label them.

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

We cross posted, Debi! I'm not busy in early February!

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Back in 2005 I bought a Japanese iris, Butterflies in Flight, but nothing came back in 2006 or 2007. I left the rock in place "just in case" it somehow emerged and this year I was rewarded. So I'm glad I kept my optimistic spirit and didn't have to use it as a tombstone.

Wow, that's great! And no haunting either!

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

I never heard of a plant taking two years off.
Patience is rewarded.

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

This past Tuesday I found two more JI's in another field that didn't come back this year so they're getting special attention in the hopes they'll surprise me someday...in 2010.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

In that case, I may have hundreds of plants that may do the Freddy Krueger thing.

The Monadnock Region, NH(Zone 5a)

Me, too. If something doesn't return I'm the one telling Anna, let's leave it for one more year, and then we'll know for sure. Now, I'm not so sure!

Kershaw, SC(Zone 8b)

Ok...due to the fact that I moved the a whole hosta bed around, I have a sinking suspicion what it is, I'm just not sure...lol...BUT do Mayapples have a giant "nut" shaped thing that stores all of it's energy for next year...it reminded me of some out of this world tennis ball. I was digging near where I planted it, and this tennis ball looking thing popped out of the ground...NO ROOTS...just a giant apple'ish looking tennis ball thing, so I smacked it against the steps (thinking it might be some strange alien hybrid bunny rabbit egg then when hatched would be more than willing to chomp all of my hosta in the spring) and it squished...then I had an "A-HA-I'm-SUCH-A-BIG-OLE-DUMB-**donkey***" moment, and figured it might actually be the Mayapple. So, do any of my fellow gardenphiles know? It is the only thing I think that it can be, but it is a strange one.

Questa, NM(Zone 5b)

Well, at least you know it's not a strange alien hybrid bunny rabbit egg! Ah ha ha ha!!!

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Suppose it is?

Questa, NM(Zone 5b)

Then it would be a "was"

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

People only *think* they've destroyed alien bunny rabbit eggs. They return tenfold with the first heavy rain.

Questa, NM(Zone 5b)

Now you've done it Thom!!!!

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Is it true that they eat daylilies?

Jersey Shore, NJ(Zone 7a)

Better burn it Thom !

Kershaw, SC(Zone 8b)

lol.

I just hope it's a Mayapple.

There are enough rabbits in this area to shake a stick at already. If it is some uber strange rabbit egg...lol...oh boy.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Omelette??

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Yesterday's gardening plans that I brought with me along with a guarantee they wouldn't blow away.

Up to your old HS tricks, Pirl?!

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

Use what youve got Pirl.

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

The Japanese irises are being watered in quite well today. I'm shocked that there's been no damage to the dahlias since I haven't tied them again since the last storm.
