Lodi, United States

I am sure you will soon be getting a recall notice from the CF, tf. Probably have to go back for retraining. I hear Mali is ghastly this time of year.

Rankin, IL(Zone 5a)

utoh.. recall for retraining... thats bad..

Fritch, TX(Zone 6b)

hey i coudl get a cool job in Mali! the kids would LOVE Living in Afirca!

Lazy-Ladies,
Thank you....my husband tends to go a bit overboard on his projects. He still needs to get electricity in there so we can have light in the winter. I'll try to get some other pictures of the coop....he really did do a nice job. We are going to hang a picture of Foghorn Leghorn inside for the ladies to have something to look at.

We only have 6 chickens total (5 together, one injured). No roosters. It was supposed to be a little "hobby" for us. Of course, I am addicted to this forum now, so who knows!

It's too late in the season for us to do anything else, as winter will be upon us soon. I think 6 is a fairly good number to start with. I'll get some dimensions of my coop and you all can tell me if I could safely/comfortably fit more girls in their eventually.

Claire - your little Polish girl is so cute...... hmmmmm......wonder if I should look into those for next year.......oh no.....now I've got a problem too!!

Well, off to work - going to work really throws a wrench into the week, doesn't it?????

Have a great day everyone,
Teresa

p.s. Now I'm not going to be able to get the chicken saddle - whether it be suede or fine corinthian leather - out of my head all day......LOL

londonderry, Australia

Teresa
great coop is that hatch for egg access??

Clarkson, KY

How about denim top, flannel under-layer.

Fritch, TX(Zone 6b)

OK, but only in winter. too warm for summer-wear...

Rankin, IL(Zone 5a)

yea, lace for the summer, light flannel baby weight, under

Oxford, NS(Zone 5b)

Need I say more???

The sweater will be to keep their backs warm in the coming cooler weather - they are not housed with the roo so do not need protection from spurs.

If I get a pattern that works, I may be open for business!!

And for those of you who are more creative...(I don't know how to knit/crochet).

Pic from BYC. Not mine.

hey.. claire.. don't take away.. this is my business... LOL.. scoot over.. we may have to go in together... I like that crochet one.. looks like granny... does she have glasses.. LOL

Oxford, NS(Zone 5b)

I'm sure there must be room for 2 in the hen saddle/sweater business! LOL! The crochet one is cute, but I am clueless on how to do such a thing. I make fleece dog coats for my greyhound, so the fleece I can probably handle.

I think here in Iowa my chickens could probably wear those from November through March!

(Tia) Norman, OK(Zone 7a)

OMG I have see it all now. You have got to be kidding me. I can crochet but hmmmmmmmmmmm.

Lodi, United States

Wouldn't the roosters' spurs get tangled up in the knitted fabric? I can just see a panicking rooster and hen tumbling around the chicken yard.

Maybe just for pretty?

Oxford, NS(Zone 5b)

Well, the crocheted one was on a rescued battery hen in England. They have an organization that rescues hens from the egg battery farms (the ones where they are in the tiny cages and are just laying machines) and they rehome them with families when the egg farms would be culling them (I think around one year old). Many times they are missing their feathers because of their previous housing, so they use these sweaters to prevent pecking by other hens and also to keep them warm because they are often naked backs.

Normally, the hens are adopted in small groups and no rooster, so no spurs to worry about.

Oh, I was thinking about the "protect the hen from the rooster market". It would broaden their appeal commercially, I think, to include them.

Clarkson, KY

Maybe that mesh fabric they use for fly masks for horses? Doubled? Reversible

Oxford, NS(Zone 5b)

I agree Catscan. But I'm thinking Fran and I would start in the chicken-lover market (i.e. my chicken is my baby market). At least I would. Fran can venture into the commercial market - I leave the door open for her to decide on that!

Lodi, United States

Do you think Paris Hilton will buy one?

Oxford, NS(Zone 5b)

Oh totally! Especially if it's pink faux fur with little glittery bits on it, or a Chanel style pink quilted one with gold chain link handles so she can pick it up and carry it around. But I wouldn't sell her a chicken if my life depended on it....

Clarkson, KY

Eeeeewwwww.

Lodi, CA(Zone 9b)

What about a tux for the boys? LOL

Oxford, NS(Zone 5b)

I was thinking I could do roo-sweaters with sports team fleece. The guys would love 'em!

Clarkson, KY

It would have to look good when they do their stud-muffin dances...Can't be dancing around a hen and trip over your fancy duds.

(Tia) Norman, OK(Zone 7a)

lmao u guys are nuts. to funny

Oxford, NS(Zone 5b)

I will do some test items and get some opinions. The Roo sweater will not get in the way of the stud-muffin dance. It might even enhance it.

Belchertown, MA

Luckycharm - yes the hatch if for eggs, we have another door on one side for cleaning purposes and on the opposite side for ventilation during the day. We also have windows that can close on the run side that provide ventilation on warmer days.

I'll get more pictures :)

Love the jackets/sweaters/etc. is anyone going to be making shoes, goggles or perhaps helmets....I'd buy a helmet for my bald girl!!

Teresa

Clarkson, KY

With a falsie comb for the roo? Not too sure on the helmet...

Oxford, NS(Zone 5b)

Oh! Chicken hats! So cute! I gotta try one...

Lodi, United States

I'm calling the ASPCA AND the Humane Society. Someone has to stop this.:0)

Oxford, NS(Zone 5b)

ROTFL....well that's no fun at all....

Lodi, United States

You should be ashamed of yourselves! Chicken dignity. It is a rare thing---just look at the slang terms about them. And now you guys are going to dress them up like court jesters. What's next, caps with bells?

Wait. That would be really cute. The roosters could wear them and the pullets could have little jingly ankle bracelets and we could sell the sounds they make on the Internet as rare folk music. Anyone aware of a remote culture we can blame---ascribe it too?

Clarkson, KY

The "Lost Tribes of Gao"-Mali I'm not doing it though -already in too deep.

Lodi, United States

Excellent. I can see a whole albumn--no wait they don't do albumns anymore. Downloads for Ipods?

(Tia) Norman, OK(Zone 7a)

lol to funny.

Oxford, NS(Zone 5b)

Oh, oh, yes! We could have Grownut do an interpretive discussion following the music - she is a linguist and is knowledgeable about the language and customs of the Lost Tribes of Gao. She could explain what each dance means and how the tribe is communicating.

Clarkson, KY

Whatever I did to you, Claire, it was worse than I thought!!lolol.

Oxford, NS(Zone 5b)

ROTFL...you converted me....
