Different hybridizers of streps wanted

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Let's all help one another with looking for streps. I , in particular, am looking for any Franken streps. If you have any, would you trade leaves with me and I will help you find what you are looking for.

I know that Roxanne wants Thompsons and I sent her as many as I had.

Put a name to your voice and maybe we can all help one another.
Thanks
gail

bummer.............I forgot to add a picture.......too late now........

This message was edited Sep 12, 2008 9:45 PM I need to state that Roxanne bought the leaves from me and I would be thrilled to also buy . Trading, selling and buying are all great ways of obtaining what we are looking for in plant material.

Anyone have (block) Bittersweet?
How DO you add a picture?

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

you hit browse..............that takes you to your own pictures..........then find the right picture and open it..........then hit preview and the thumbnail will appear. When we see it, it will be much bigger than the thumbprint............sorry I don't have Bittersweet.....

Wytheville, VA

I do have Tattoo. i have a start listed on ebay, but I have a second larger one that I can share a few leaves from.
How do I find out which streps are Thompsons?
Sorry! I am full of questions!

google the word streptocarpus and the first thing you find is a site which has all the streps, episcias, etc...............

The lady does it all by herself and always needs money to keep it going so I promote anyone donating any money. If everyone just donated a couple of dollars it would make her life so much easier as it cost a lot of money with the number of hits she gets.........

Wytheville, VA

i sent her $10 last week!
I was hoping to find a list of hybridizers! Hers is alphabetical. I mean, how do i know which streps Thompson bred?

Ottawa, IL(Zone 9a)

i don't think there is a list of hybridizers, but someone here would probably know the name of the hybridizer of a particular strep.if your talking about carlyn site, you have to go thru them all.it will say who hybridized it.

Ottawa, IL(Zone 9a)

i like thompson streps & chris rose,& i do have some of nancy blocks, right now they have to grow as i have taken leaves from them, think i have 5 of hers,

Kivit, I don't understand how you can be this lost with hybridizer's names when you I think you sell on ebay, don't you? I am not being ugly but we are a small group of people who try to help one another as most of us can't afford to shop on ebay for gesneriads. Jim is always ready to help people out so I think that if you sell on ebay you need to tell him that you do.

If I am wrong, please correct me and hit me with wet noodles.

Wytheville, VA

no, you are absolutely correct! I have sold a few streps on ebay to try & offset my habit. If you look at the post 6 posts above this one, I say I have Tattoo on ebay, but that I also have another larger start from which I can offer a few leaves.
I also have seeds for sale, but i offered them free to a poster who said they would like to start some seeds. They replied that they hadnt time right now. I was very clear that I hadnt hybridized the seeds & only knew the seed parent.
I bought my first streps from Rob's I think this winter. Killed most of them immediately with overwatering. luckily, I'd put down a leaf from each one, so as these are beginning to bloom, I am finding some that I'd lost. ( no, i didnt know enough to label the leaves)
I realize that you do not know me yet. I only paid my subscription yesterday.
I will be selling although it is getting close to too cold to ship, but what I have offered on this board, I have offered free. I had checked the wants, & noticed Jim wanted Dainty Lady & Spooky, both of which I recently bought. So when the leaves are a bit larger, I will send him them. I have a tendency to jump into things with both feet, so i have aquired a number of streps. But I cant afford it either! My credit card is overextended & hubby is pissed with my streps in the living room. So i am delighted to have found this forum. Hopefully, I will have new friends to swap & trade with & to learn from. That was a rather harsh judgement on your part, that careful reading could have avoided.

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

That was harsh of me and I apologize. You really are a newbie and I thought that all of your questions about what to feed plants, where to find hybridizers, etc. you would know if you were an ebay seller. I was wrong. I guess some people like you sell on ebay even though they are newbies to growing them. I just assumed too much...........like thinking that you would know a lot about the plants you were selling and I was wrong.

Please accept my apology and hope we can be friends.
gail

We wish you would try selling on DG Markeplace...........everyone buys gessies the minute they appear................wish I hadn't been so ugly..................we really do welcome you..........This is no excuse but I am still wrestling with shingles after 3 months and currently a strep throat............so again......

I can understand how easy it is to get the hybridizer's name separated from the the cultivar name-- it is often just omitted. Sometimes, especially when one is new to a specific genera the the realization that the hybridizers name is actually part of the cultivar name is not apparent right off the bat. In fact I just realized this about streps a few days ago. I did know that it was that way with AV's--but don't grow those. I am like Kivit-- I tend to jump in with both feet too, the actual knowledge comes later along with the experience. That is part of the fun! My DH has gritted his teeth through many, many plant "phases". We did come to an understanding though, when I informed him that if I spent as much money each week on plants as he did on beer, he couldn't build a greenhouse big enough to hold them^_^

Wytheville, VA

LOL! Tommie, that was truly funny! Mailed your leaf at noon today.

Gail! Apoplgy accepted!
shingles would make anyone cross.

not sure yet about the workings of Marketplace. I may try that in the future.
the reason I joined this forum though was to swap, trade & learn!

Some people have lost their strep collection & I am happy to help replace them. Others, like me, are just starting ( and they are not quite as crazy as I!!) so I will share leaves. have about 50 streps but most are quite small. at night, instead of watching TV, I browse thro Streptocarpus-info.com! have to see whatI'll fall in love with next! That's the only place I had ever seen Dales Scarlet Macaw & now mrsbonnie has offered me a leaf! Be still, my heart!

Jasper, AR(Zone 7a)

Thanks Kivet!! Gail there is an amino acid, L-lysine that really helps when I have shingles, (works great on cold sores too). If I start taking it when I feel an outbreak coming on, it makes it less severe, and seems to help it heal faster.

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Thank you kivit for accepting my apology. I am very grouchy.

Hillbilly Gran. This is the first time I have had the shingles but they won't go away. This is the 4th month. I saw the neurologist this past Friday and he is increasing my dosage of Lyrica which is supposed to help with pain. I had my heart set on his blocking nerves again. He did the 8,9 and 10 ribs (under the ribs) one month ago and that stopped the pain in my back. That nerve runs around the body under the breast and never stops hurting. I am also taking Loritab twice a day as I know it is very addictive. Maybe he wouldn't block the nerves anymore because I was sick when I came in with a strep throat.

Did you find that the shingles weakened your immune system something terrible? I have always been a healthy person and don't get colds or the flu, etc.

Kivit, I will send you two space dust leaves tomorrow. I don't think I have anything else you were looking for unless you tell me something else you would like.

Jasper, AR(Zone 7a)

Gail, shingles seem to pop up as a result of a weakened immune system. I can count on an occurence if I have been sick or especially if I've been stressed. Like you I am rarely sick, but occasionally have a LOT of stress in my life. I have never had a flare up as prolonged as that. I would tell you to try the L-lysine, but that would be considered practicing medicine without a license. What I can tell you, is that I will not be without it in my cupboard!! If I am not mistaken, L-lysine bolsters the immune system, but don't quote me on that
Tommie.

Wytheville, VA

Hmmm!
How come the neurologist didnt reblock those nerves? I would ask him again, outright. it not only helps with pain, it is supposed to interrupt the breakout.
A Chiropractor can help too because the spine manipulation has roughly the same effect as the nerve block, but nerve block is much more effective!
Shingles are in everybody's nervous sytem who has had chicken pox as a child. Thta's most of us! They"rest' until something weakens our immune system enough to allow the virus to break out as shingles. you can catch chicken pox from the shingles pustules, but you cant catch shingles.
Wow! space Dust! i cant remember how many times I have been outbid on that one!
Thank you! Thank you! :-)

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

will do tomorrow. Without the gory details..........what set my shingles off was that 6 days before I broke out in blisters I had 5 teeth pulled, tissue and lots of bone grafting plus 8 implants done at one visit with no pain pills (only alleve). I got real dehyrated my doctor said when I went to him crying with pain in my back.
I won't talk about it anymore...........nothing I can do now but smile!

Whitsett, NC(Zone 8a)

Gail - if you want to try a chiropractor, next time you come to town you can go to mine! He is real good and is only one exit away from your dentist (kinda cute, too!) shh, don't tell DH!!

Wytheville, VA

the dental work is what wiped out your immune system! The moth is a cesspool of bacteria ! You not only had teeth pulled but also soft tissue & bone manipulation.
Did they not put you on antibiotic afterwards???

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

He put me on really strong antibiotics and naproxen..............both of which upset my stomach terribly and that is how I got so dehydrated. My legs were cramping everywhere and my eye lids were twitching like crazy by the time I got to my own doctor a week later. The dentist blamed it on me not drinking enough water. My own doctor told me I couldn't have possibly drunk enough water to replace what I was losing with my stomach that upset.

Wytheville, VA

Yes, unfortunately nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drugs ( alleve, advil, Naproxen etc) tend to damage the stomach lining, even if you take them with food.If your legs were cramping , you had lost so much potassium you were in danger. the side effects of too much or too little potassium is sudden death.I find it interesting that those at fault always blame their victim, ie "YOU didnt drink enough"
I am sorry that you had to go through that.

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Thanks, kivit! We will change the subject with a new picture of one of my favorite episcias, Alfred Sharpe.

*Are you sure you are not a doctor or a registered nurse (smiling) as you have a lot of knowledge. The doctor said I had virtually no potassium left.

Ok, drooling here, Gail . . . ^_^

(will be back after getting coffee and paper towels!)

Jasper, AR(Zone 7a)

Gorgeous!!

Wytheville, VA

sorry, got carried away!
yes, I am a retired doctor, anesthesiologist.

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

I could tell as my daughter and her husband are both doctors and there are many many doctor cousins, etc in the family. They just explain things so medically but in a way we all understand.

Wytheville, VA

That's a nice complimenmt! I do try to explain clearly. thanks!

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

The only thing we can't stand as a family is when we have a family gathering and we get enough doctors together that they seek out one another and then start talking medicine. Drives us all crazy.......sooner or later their wives break it up and tell them to socialize with everyone. (even though their wives are physicians, too.....they are more social)

Northeast, NE(Zone 5a)

Gail..I sure hope they can get the pain from those shingles under control soon..with as active as you are used to being I can sure see how they could cramp your style to say the least..I sure couldn't handle that kind of unpredictable pain!..ooo that Alfred Sharpe is neat looking..I didn't have any idea of how many different Episcias are out there..blows my mind..all are so neat looking too!

LOL Tommie...my hubby has to put up with me and my plant phases too..

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

They come and go, Nancy! Today I feel fantastic..........I ws on the phone with my youngest daughter telling her how mad I was at my dentist and told him so, etc.........She said, "Oh Mother, now that you have vented, calm down or your shingles will flare up"..........of course I started laughing.

Ottawa, IL(Zone 9a)

wow, so glad to hear you are haveing a good day for a change.good for you.
mrsbonnie

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Bonnie, I just told my sister in law that I felt better today than I had in months...........but I did nothing but feel good...........had all these projects in mind..............instead I wrote a couple of letters, paid bills and just messed around with laundry.

But IT FEELS TERRIFIC TO FEEL GOOD!!
Maybe it will even change my lousy attitude.........and I can become 'fun and sassy' again.
