What do you wear when you need to go out somewhere "nice" ?

Santa Fe, NM

I don't mean "formal" like a wedding; but like to a good restaurant or an opening or a concert? I am 55 years old and generally look like I'm going gardening, camping or to a tai chi class. Which is usually the case. I don't want to try to look like a 20 year old but I like to be somewhat in style. In the place where I live people wear all manner of clothing and more or less anything goes. I don't have much money to spend and I will not wear uncomfortable shoes anywhere, ever! What kind of things do you wear?

We went to a very formal wedding this past July. Nice ankle length dress, hose, heels - bra !

Never again. I am 62 years old, and I prefer jeans and t-shirts. Two weeks ago, we went to a nice restaurant for dinner. I wore a denim jumper with a t-shirt, white sox and tennis shoes. This is my "good" outfit from now on. People either like me for the charming, witty person that I am, or they can leave me alone - lol !

My 'uniform' for this type of occasion is: nice slacks (usually black and not cotton), a collared blouse or v-neck shirt and shoes with a heel. Not necessarily a high heel, but one that is separate. And don't forget the jewelry. It instantly makes you dressed up! Hope it's OK that I answered this - I struggle with this question all the time myself!

I sometimes wear for 'special occasions': denim pants or khaki slacks, white poet's shirt, ecru tapestry vest, white socks and brown oxford shoes.

Flat shoes so I can walk without wobbling or wincing. An elegant, long skirt with an elastic waistband so I can eat comfortably. A patterned top, so if I spill food or wine on myself it won't show. Add a few bits of co-ordinated jewelry or a silk scarf, a spritz of perfume, and I'm all set for the fancy restaurant.

I have one outfit for "Good" occassions. Black dress slacks, red and black top, flat black shoes. Jewelry does make the outfit. I wear this to fancy restaurants and when I have court. (I work retail security.)

Hmm made me think, I usually wear black slacks, patterned blouse and some black clogs that are comfortable. I have a couple of things should another wedding occur..not looking like that is happening anytime in the future. ...and will have to re-think doing that, as .finding shoes that are comfortable and used for one or two times is difficult. I left the wedding before the chocolate truffle cart was brought out. Darn shoes!!! Those got donated elsewhere; !!

Usually a dress for "special" occasions. Guess I am in the minority, but I LOVE wearing heels.........as Shania would sing......."Man, I feel like a Woman". Try to keep my legs shaved and the toenails lacquered up so I don't have to wear nylons.

Anymore, at my advanced age (58), I pretty much wear what I want and don't really care what anyone thinks. (I don't mean grunge, here, or jeans to a wedding, etc.). If I want to get dressed up and even if I know most everyone else won't be, I do so, because I want to and it makes me feel great. So, to each her own, I guess, is what I'm saying. I'm comfortable enough with myself that I dress for me.

Oh, and a big YES to the jewelry.........I LOVE my "jools"........I have diamond earrings and I NEVER take them out. Someone asked spousal unit many years ago........"You mean you let her wear those earrings TO THE BARN???" Spousal Unit said, "I don't really have anything to say about it, and besides, that is why they are insured!" I have several pieces of very good stuff, and I love wearing them. Ya, ok, vanity, thy name is AnnaZ............^_^

linen, wide-leg palazzo pants, a fitted tank top to balance the wide bottom, a cashmere cardigan to take along, ballet flats or good sandals (either flat or kitten heel) and diamond studs.

i also like tunics with leggings and tall funky boots in the winter.

Wow! Good response and good ideas. I ended up with jeans, clogs, and a nice black long sleeved t-shirt with a necklace for the openings and I did not feel out of place. I do need something besides jeans and more drapey, pajama type pants. I think the jewelry thing is something I need to work on. I had almost all my jewelry stolen five years ago and it has been very difficult for me to wear what I have left which mostly just sits in a safe deposit box at the bank. Not much fun with that! I love boots in the winter but tend more toward hiking boots, I'm afraid. I used to have a great collection of Doc Martens, still have some of them. Maybe they will come back in style. Tonight we went to a casual dance party and had so much fun it didn't matter what anyone was wearing!
