OMG! NOW WHAT?

Bessemer, AL(Zone 8b)

it is day 21. help!

Fritch, TX(Zone 6b)

well, get the room dark and a small flashlight...

Fritch, TX(Zone 6b)

the peeping occurs when they break through and take their first breath. i have been out of the loop, how many days ago did they peep? and what breed are they?

can you see any pips, small cracks in the shell. that usually happens after they break through the membranes, then thjey break through the shell. if you can find it, then you need to tap near that, which is going to be at the large end of the egg but on the side. listen carefully and see if you get a response to the tapping...

Bessemer, AL(Zone 8b)

they are gold laced black cochins and partridge cochin

Bessemer, AL(Zone 8b)

ok, there is a tiny crack. i tapped and i can barely hear hr. she started peeping friday

Fritch, TX(Zone 6b)

that is relaly too long. she must have got tired. does her peep sound weak? how many eggs?

Bessemer, AL(Zone 8b)

very faint. should i help her. nothing from the other 9 yet

Fritch, TX(Zone 6b)

i would. get a kitchen fork, standar size, and have a samll bowl handy. do this near a heat lamp of some sort so she deosnt' get chilled, amke certain there is no draft in the room

Bessemer, AL(Zone 8b)

ok, be back in a bit

Fritch, TX(Zone 6b)

tap with the side of the fork till you make the pipabout mickel sized. use the tines to pull out the membrane and find her beak. be VERY careful because her eye is right near her beak.

Bessemer, AL(Zone 8b)

okay, i'll try

Fritch, TX(Zone 6b)

if she is still alive, then do this VERY carefully [dern where is catscan with her links when you need her?]

do you remember when we did this before? basically, the veins go across this area where they break or ZIP around the shell to open it. so if bleeding starts, you need to wait fo rit to stop before you continue. but time is of the essence since it has been so long, and i feel it is likely that the veins are dried up and she is ready just too weak... once she pipped and let air in, it starts drying up.

if you can candle the small end of the egg, perhaps you can she if she has absorbed the eggyolk yet. if not you can't take her out yet. just help her get started.

Fritch, TX(Zone 6b)

im going to stay ehre at the pc. everyone else must be having their coffee, eggs and bonbons LOL

(Tia) Norman, OK(Zone 7a)

Oh no... So sad. I'm sorry Jordankitty.. You have a good attitude though.

Bessemer, AL(Zone 8b)

well, my bantam went broody so maybe.......

Lodi, United States

I'm sorry jordankittyjo! I was in Brazil. It is always a learning process. How many eggs were there? Were they all from the same source? How far along had the other chicks gotten? Were you able to monitor the temp and the RH closely? If most of the chicks had fully developed, maybe the RH dropped to low? Or there could have just been poor egg viability. If that is the case, they can develop completely, but still not have the strength to pip.

If you can figure out what went wrong--especially if it was something you did wrong and not just the eggs themselves--you should have great results next time.

Sorry for such a disappointing first outcome:0(

Reynoldsville, PA(Zone 6a)

i am so sorry.
hugs,
silkie

Bessemer, AL(Zone 8b)

catscan, i'm thinking a combo of the eggs and me. i got them off of e-bay

Lodi, United States

From what I remember of other's experiences, mailed eggs and eBay eggs in particular, can have a poor hatch. I've had luck with egg.bid eggs (not much selection at the moment) and I am sure there are producers on eBay who stand behind their eggs. The shipping is hard on all of them.

Bessemer, AL(Zone 8b)

gonna try hatching my own out.

Clarkson, KY

Go for it Jordan. Had similar experiences myself and applause to you for going right back in the ring (um,er-cubater)

Bessemer, AL(Zone 8b)
