Has anyone ever heard of this.... not saying thanks for seeds or plants? My husband got some seeds from a co-worker and she said don't say thanks... dimilar to not telling an actor to do well ("Break a leg!" instead.). Anyone ever heard of this?
Don't say "Thank You?"
Yes I have my grandmother always said not to say thank you for a plant or it would die.Which I guess is pretty common around here when I give somebody a plant they always say well I would say thanks but! lol
Same thing with my neighbor. She leaves the gardening to her DH....LOL.
"eyes"
I just wouldn't know how to act if I couldn't say 'thank you'. Would be very awkward for me not to thank a person for something.I don't care what it might be. I don't think I could just walk away without saying 'thank you'.Just not in me. It's always please, yes please, thank you, no thank you, yes maam, no maam, yes sir,no sir. Somebody says jump...and I ask how high.
I've thanked people for every seed or plant I've ever received, and only a very very few of these have ever "not made it".
Still thanking!
Dave
I agree Dave I do the same. I figure by people saying I would say thanks but you know what I mean that they are really thanking me. But thats never stopped me I go right on saying thank you and like you I don't think I have ever lost a plant because I said thank you for other reasons maybe. lol
That superstition is here in New Orleans also... you're supposed to say "much obliged instead.
We say thanks for the dirt or pot never for the plant or seeds. For seeds we thank people for whatever container or envelope they gave us with them in. Happy gardening!!!
Yep, my Gramma used to say the same thing ~ makes me feel funny to this day saying "thank you" even though a black cat or broken mirror doesn't even make me flinch. I say something along the lines of "I realy appreciate this! It's so nice of you to share!"
That's taking formalities to its limits! I think sometimes that we 'overdo' this, say thanks, please.... Stan Laurel, in a movie was carrying (I think it was a grandfather clock) across the road and it was covering his vision. He walks right onto a lamp-post - "Crash". He then says: "I beg your pardon, Lamp-post" and walks on.
Around here folks say the same thing, but with my southern manner's, I have always said thanks, and have lost very few, LOL.. I always tell my sister-in-law who really believes this, well just say "Much Obliged"....I send off so many seeds and plants and would at least like to know they made it there, a thanks wouldn't hurt either..They won't die from it..LOL..Common courtesy never goes out of style..
Larkie
I've often heard this, but always say thanks and accept thanks - I think the plants appreciate it too. What's more polite than a pansy??
I just wouldn't feel right if I didn't say thanks, either. But you can say it like EyesO'Tx ,DE Nada, which means for nothing, but yet you are much obliged.
My background is also New Orelanian, and I remember my
grandmother always saying " Im not gonna thank you for
this" with a big grin. I always will remmeber that.
