MONET NO FUJI!!!

Boxford, MA(Zone 6a)

After $30 and all the seedlings dying save ONE, I FINALLY have a blooming Monet No Fuji!!!
Yaaaay!!!!!!!!!!
This pic is out of focus, but it is the only one that shows the colors correctly. The in-focus shot shows more detail.
Now, how to get seed? Will it set seed itself, or should I hand-pollinate?

This is the in-focus shot. It just shows the blossom beaten by the heavy rains yesterday...

Jax, I too bought those seeds for $30. My results were quite mixed. The seed germinated well for me and grew fine. But I'd say that 40% of the blooms were pink with white, 40% were blue with white and only 20% were the 'correct' color. The correct ones were quite striking though. Did you have about the same?

Boxford, MA(Zone 6a)

I got the $30 pack of seeds; only 3 germinated, then 2 just died after I planted them out. I got VERY lucky to get this one plant, so I can't compare my results to yours. I hope I can get seeds from this one that will bloom true. Then I can be selling the $30 seeds!!!

Boxford, MA(Zone 6a)

Can one plant have more than 1 color bloom? I haven't noticed that being the case.

Jax4ever - Absolutely one vine may produce blooms that are not consistent! One of my crosses produced so many different patterns and colors that I named it Kaleidoscope. LOL!

Hi Melissa well the Fuji No Monet you sent me bloomed for me also. So far all of mine have been the same. I love it!!! Thank you again for sharing with me!

Great picture!!! I guess my light wasn't right- or maybe I need a new camera! It's a blueish purple that I don't think I've ever seen in a flower before!

Anyway, the blossoms on this plant are all the same (that I've noticed.) Ditto w/ all the GREAT Nil seeds that you sent me!!! THANK YOU!!!!

I do like the Fuji no Monet blooms, but I don't know if I could fork over $30 for them. How many seeds did you get for that price?

Boxford, MA(Zone 6a)

I think about 8 seeds; it wasn't many. I wisely traded a few to Luvs, in case I screwed up. It's a good thing I did; we have 2 plants now instead of 1!

What can I say? I'm a sucker for pretty pictures, and that ebay seller had very pretty pictures!!! It's the most I've ever paid for seeds; almost more than I've paid for a plant! It wound up being a good investment, b/c I have lots of beautiful Nils from the trade, and, hopefully, seeds for next year!

luvs - I think the lavender color on this

is outstanding...(!)

Becky, I'd be happy to send you some seeds to try. My plants have some green seed pods on now so it will be a little while before they're ready. I can't guarantee what the blooms will look like. My plants produced mixed but I did get some of those beautiful ones.

I never grew JMG's before and so I thought I could justify the $$ on these seeds. Found the thread on here talking about them not coming true after I had the seeds, of course! Don't think I would have used as much of my seed budget if I had seen it sooner.

This one is showing a bit more of the solid color. It was pretty cool here last night and I think the weather this time of year plays a key part in flower production. There wasn't as much pink as the photo is showing though.

Seed budget? What's that ;0) ?

luvs, that's bee-yoo-tyful! The petals look like butterfly wings. I think the price was worth it. I am going out again to see if I can get a clearer shot of mine.

Still a lovely bloom Ronnie. The cooler night temp is affecting the
color of my blooms and the size.

(Ronnie), PA(Zone 6b)

I'll admit I've spent way more than what seeds are worth $ wise but still glad I purchased most of the. The generosity that the MG forum people alone have shown me, more than makes up for cost of other seeds!!!

Boxford, MA(Zone 6a)

I just noticed that the same blossom I saw in lavender yesterday is now pink! They must change w/ age; also, we had the coolest temps. of the season last night. There are lots of buds on the Monet vine- here's hoping the weather stays warm enough for them to bloom.

(Ronnie), PA(Zone 6b)

Mine turned pink too!!

Boxford, MA(Zone 6a)

I love pink ;0) but I have some blooms that are pink and were cheaper!

Patootie, what has the night time temps done to your colors?

Jacksonville, AR(Zone 7b)

It's warmed back up here some but a few nights ago, the blues looked
like they were saturated with purple. Mine tend to do that every yr as fall approaches. Usually more noticeable in Oct.
I tried to get a pic of one this morning that had changed
but haven't uploaded it yet. If it's any good, will send it later.

Jacksonville, AR(Zone 7b)

Here's a bloom that has changed. I don't have a clue which mg this is
after only 4 hrs sleep last night. lol A blue turning purple or a purple turning blue.
Could be Purple Blizzard changing to blue.

How come this Mt. Fuji is so expensive? 0_0.

Boxford, MA(Zone 6a)

I wish I knew why they are expensive. Maybe the unusual color and pattern w/ the white blaze doesn't appear in F1 seeds, but only the original cultivar???!!??? I hope not! BTW, Mine is now blooming in a deep pink, yet still w/ the white; the temps are now regularly in the upper 40s now at night, w/ days 60+. This is much cooler and less sunny than they'd like; the foliage is now tinged w/ yellow on most of my MGs, yet they're still blooming. We are having a tropical storm now w/ 6" of rain predicted; I'm hoping the damp doesn't ruin any seeds forming!

This particular coloration MG is still in the process of being stabilized and multiplied...it is still relatively uncommon and the price may reflect that status...
