Our postal delivery guy found this golden brown stripped spider in our mail box today and got pretty excited about it.
Does anyone know what kind it might be and if it is or is not one of the more dangerous of breed?, or is it just mean looking.
CLOSED: This large (nickle size) spider was inside my mailbox
Although the coloration appears a bit unusual, this could be a grass/funnel-web spider (family Agelenidae) in the genus Agelenopsis - see http://www.pbase.com/tmurray74/image/34080648 Large specimens can give a painful bite if mishandled, but otherwise are harmless to humans.
It is as close a match as I have been able to find so far, so I am going to call it "solved" and move on.
Those three bands of color on the head look different on the postal guard, and the head is round on mine rather than elongated but the colors seem to match, as does the eye layout.
Many thanks!
bob
