GFs tend to be territorial. Mine always try to chase other kinds of butterflies off. It's funny when a GF tries that with a larger butterfly. You know, I'm wondering if any of the returning butterflies changed where they were flying because of Ike. The devastation it caused must be a problem for them, especially since coastal areas are popular with butterflies!

Great shots nanny, Linda, and Debnes!! Love those buckeyes, but they haven't come around my place this year ...YET!! Not going to say that!
I am almost as excited to see bees this year as I am butterflies!!! They are swarming all over my Frostweed!!! I missed them last year glad they are making a showing this year.

Yeah Linda it could change the migration, stir them up and maybe even disperse further out than the straight path they normally take. Makes sense to me, :- ). Butterflies are fairly good with sensing weather, it's chemicals and predators they are most defenseless of.

Here too Sheila the bees seem to be back in force finally. They are all over my Frostweed too.. Honey bees, bumble bees, and all sorts of wasps too.

Lots of beautiful photos everyone!!! I would've loved to have seen a monarch pupating, how great you got that shot Meredith! I'm not having much luck with the monarchs; my milkweed leaves suffered from the aphids and ended up black and ugly (I think it's called common milkweed, the stuff we used to have all over the meadows in CT). I did see a couple of cats on it, but I don't know what happened to them.
I was glad to find out the identity of the Tersa cat. Now I know why you were so concerned about your guy months ago Kim! What a cute cat!
Elaine, I'm SO sorry I missed you, and that my yard was such a mess when you saw it!! It's been going downhill the past couple of weeks, and then we were on vacation last week. When we got home it looked AWFUL. I just can't cut down my zinnias while they're still flowering, the butterflies love them, but they got so leggy and ugly! Thanks for the seeds, I'll pick them up from Sandy when I take care of the dogs this weekend! Wish I had something you wanted. Texas star hibiscus maybe (I KNOW I have seeds from that)?

I just LOVE those hairstreaks.

Well I went out to a local slough today on a mission to catch some butterflies and birds. I only had luck with butterflies (I missed a huge heron or crane or something).

here are my pix.

Firstly, a really poor beat up Monarch boy to match your RSP, Nanny.

MsEd....You have some wonderful shots there! Great photography, thanks for sharing. Sorry they are at the end of the thread, next time you will have to start a new thread if it is getting long and you have a lot of beauties.

Ms Ed....
Your shots of the sulphurs are super and need to be in our Bug Files. But I am not certain either about the id on them. I looked at this site and feel it may be the Orange Sulphur. http://www.naba.org/chapters/nabambc/frames-0species.asp
The female is the greenish and the open wing shot a male. The other species it could be is a Clouded Sulphur, but in the description it says the OS flies later in the year than the CS. If you would, send a dmail to kennedyh and ask if he can give you a definate id; then post them on Bug Files.
Keep clicking that camera.
