CLOSED: Can anyone ID this Red Velvet bug

Chennai, India

I found this very interesting bug about 4 weeks ago in Hyderabad, India. Its body is covered with red velvety fur-like coat. It was out during the rainy season, but I found only one of this species roaming about. Can someone tell me what this bug is?

What's so strange about this critter is that it has legs growing from different places. Two pairs seem to spring from the head area while two more from the thorax. I never saw such an insect so far!

hi, thanks for the information. i didn't know it was called red velvet. The camera is about an year old. Its a regular consumer range Sony Cybershot but has nice macro feature built in and the lens is Carl Zeiss.

I had, or still have, a Sony DSC V1, great little camera but with only 5MP. Your mites look bigger than ours!

Just saw your camera model on the web. Sony seems to reduce some features in newer models. Mine's got only 3x optical zoom while DSC V1 is 4x. I used to have a Hi8 Handycam and that had 12x optical! Age of consumerism, what else can I say! ;)

I was very happy with it, but 10MP now doesn't seem to be enough! I have noticed the reduction in quality as Nikon and Sony introduce more complicated cameras. Nikon uses a Sony CCD sensor in the D40X (which I now have) and D80, their newer models with over 12MP use a CMOS sensor which is much cheaper to make and less quality. I guess other technology makes up for it in ways, but I would prefer they used a better quality sensor and leave out some of the other new features which few people will ever use. The market is very competitive and price is a deciding factor with many, I wish they would make their DSLR lens cheaper!
