I've heard fall is coming early this year, so thought I'd ask the NE DGers if this seems to be true?
Early fall?
NOT! It was 94 here on Thursday. I remember when we had the first day of school and we used to wear our new fall clothes. If you had short sleeves on you had a sweater or jacket over it. I'm still wearing shorts in the AM to bring my son to school.
Wow - that is summer-time HOT! I grew up in central PA; you're right about needing a sweater or jacket. It wasn't long after the first week of school that frosty mornings appeared. Thanks flowerjen.
Going down to the mid-40's early Thursday!
brrrr....are the leaves turning yet?
Only in isolated spots, but that's probably more due to drought stress (before Hanna!) than the temps.
Hanna did bring some much needed rain.
Yes it did. And we're getting more today.
AMEN!! It's been so dry. I have a few colorful leaves, but I too think it's because of lack of rain.
It is getting a bit nippy in the mornings . . .
Morning nip--by noon temp back in the 70s and has gone up to 80s here in NE MA.
Now that sounds like some glorious weather!
going to be a low of 45 here tomorrow night
:(
Here it's been fairly warm and humid (upper 70s to lower 80s in the daytime and 60s at night ) and as I walk outside in my garden it's still possible to totally forget that I DO live in a seasonal climate now and Fall is just waiting around the corner. . . it doesn't seem any earlier than usual, in my admittedly limited experience. A few leaves at the tops of trees are showing color. . .the Burning Bush shrubs are just starting to turn. I love them, invasive thugs that they have lately been named.
This cold front and rain are bringing our temps down, but for the most part, September feels very much summer...hot and humid. October is when it'll start to look, feel, and smell like fall. Can't wait!
DH and I have planned a trip to NE with our mothers, and I'm praying the leaves stay colorful and on the trees!
when is your trip?
mid October...

going to be a tough one ... where are you going?
never been to this site before but maybe it will help

Where in the NE?
Thanks for the great link, onewish; I'll be checking that site 'cause naked trees and snow flurries aren't quite what we have in mind! ;)
After much deliberation, we've decided to visit NH, Maine, and eastern Canada on an another trip, preferably earlier in the season. So we're visiting NY, VT, MA, & possibly the NW corner of CT, depending on our route home.
victorgardener, we may be in your neck of the woods as we're staying a night in the Catskills and in the Stockbridge area. I just can't wait!!!
It was very hot here last week, but a storm brought the cool are in. And yes the leaves are starting in some areas. Not sure why, I have yet to figure out why leaves turn color on trees! (I seem to get a slightly different answer OR my observations make the answer incorrect or suspect. And we don't learn these kinds of things in S Florida! lol)
Leaf color does seem to be a dynamic process. I've even seen a few trees changing here, but I'm guessing that's attributed to stress brought on by drought. Fortunately, this year wasn't nearly as dry as last year.
I heard leaves are really those bright colors, duering the season with most sunlightSpring and Summer) they are green due to chlorophyl manufacturing.
Duering the season where sunlight is waining( Fall) they don't make as much Chloro. and so return to the bright color they were originally for the brief time temps. will support this.
Late Fall temps prohibit growth so the leaves continue to die and drop off the trees, makes for a pretty season.
Up here in the North most leaves are gone by December.
Thats the explanation I heard.
It's true that the compounds that give the leaves color are always there and are overwhelmed by the green of chlorophyll during the growing season. But the intensity of color is affected by many things including amount of rain throughout the season, temperatures, etc. The ideal conditions in fall are warm sunny days followed by cool, crisp nights.
Yep and those cool nights bring on the Mums blooms too.
Speaking of fall do any of you decorate your houses and yards with fall decor? I started to and couldn't bring myself to start bringing out the scarecrows and pumpkins bacause it's still so warm here.
We do. I'll start soon. All I've done so far is change the flag out front to a fall one.
I have a few Astor and Mums around the yard! lol I just shook out the scarecrow yesterday and cut down a few corn stalks.
I love to decorate for Fall/Hallowe'en, too . Haven't started yet either--it's felt too much like the end-of-summer. BUT: last night was definitely snuggle-time as our temps dropped into the low 50s and today I am eyeing those pumpkins and mums at the local plant nurseries.
Great photos, Pixie!
we started pulling our our halloween stuff this week... takes us a few weeks to set everything up.. if you are going to decorate might as well griswald it out... that's what we say!
;)
A few weeks?!!
LOL.... yes you read correctly
How long for Christmas? Months?
3 - 4 weeks... so far.. I figure sooner or later we are going to take down the halloween and start christmas ... we keep picking up things at the clearance sales after christmas.... last year I picked up industrial led light strings... to make our lives easier.... and someday I hope to get the light controllers for the computer... but for now we use a box that has pre programmed light shows to music.... my dinning room is filled with boxes at the moment so we can sort everything out
we always have our halloween party on columbus weekend .... so we have to get moving
:)
What's different about the industrial led's compared to regular?
Nice collage Celeste!
Thanks Anita & Emily, It was from a year or two ago. I need to make a new one this year.
Allison have a little bit of decorations do we? Now we know why you needed the shed built!
(Shhhh, Alison, don't tell but it takes me at least a couple of weeks to decorate for Hallowe'en too. I've been collecting Hallowe'en stuff, er, I mean tasteful decorations for maaany years and I can never bear not to put them all up.)
the industrial are longer strands and the industrial box they plug into can handle many more linked together they can handle up to 125 sets hooked together... where the standard you can only have 15
