A friend had a large leaf magnolia tree and cut it down. Now it is growing back as a bush.
Question??
Will it flower as a bush?
Her reason for cutting it down was size but a bush would be manageable, but only worth it if it blooms.
Magnolia question?
Do you mean Magnolia macrophylla 'Bigleaf' ? If so it is described by some as a large vigorous shrub. So it may flower eventually, but just when after this big a cut back is hard to say.

Yes, it will bloom when it is large enough, depending on the type of magnolia. Usually, if this is a regular saucer magnolia (since the Southern bigleaf magnolias aren't hardy in your area that I know of), it will produce blooms when it gets to about 5' or so, possibly smaller.
If it's Magnolia macrophylla, common name Bigleaf Magnolia, it's hardy to zone 5b. Of course it's deciduous in the northern zone.

In the PlantFiles it's shown hardy to zone 5a.

I looked at the information and am not sure if it is that tree. the leaves are large but not ''that ''large. It is one of the ones that blooms late in the year.
Thank you so much for all the help.
^_^
Hey gardengus, get a photo and I'm sure it can be ID'd.
Ok , but it might be a few days till I get back to her house.
