Whose had frost so far?

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

J*a*c*k is definitely visiting here tonight. I will cascading the sheets and shower curtains with abandon this evening. Crappola that I can't save all the dahlia blooms.

Moose Jaw, SK(Zone 3b)

Crossing fingers and toes for you Dahlianut and all the other folks here from Calgary (I just checked your forecast :S) Hopefully they have dropped it down 2 degrees more than what it will be). Tonight we might be covering anything we missed at the patch with flashlights (and I might be hauling a few plants from my yard inside).

I'm thankful I have tomorrow off as I will be busy picking everything again that shows any sign of ripening.

Off now to process some of my tomatoes.

Still no frost here, but I'm guessing we could get some on the weekend. Not going to be covering this time but I must get a few plants dug up from the containers still.

Remember, when you are covering, it is most effective if you do it before the warmth of the day is gone. If you miss anything, you could always get up at 5:00 and give everything a spray of water. :)

So which bulbs need to be dug up before frost? Need a reminding nudge. Callas? What about Sprekelia? and I think I'll dig up my Agapanthus this year and bring it in. It didn't do that well this summer.

Im digging out some geraniums I want to try to save from the containers and cutting some flowers but otherwise plants can look after themselves!

Fiddle dee dee !! I just can't get a GRIP on this weather !! This morning I had coffee on the patio and it was 55F and HUMID !!! The day has 'threatened' rain .. but so far nothing is happening ..
As far as Jacky boy goes .. well .. I think he may have scooted back out west for a bit.

I'll dig up my Canna bulbs after the Canna blooms die off .. the 3 Perennial gardens are hanging on by their wee leaves :-) they do't wanna give up, and I don't want'em to either !!
That said .. we have a 2 month supply of wood stacked and ready to go by the backdoor .. everytime I go outside I cringe. Can't use it til after Oct.7 as that's when the Chimney sweeps arrive to do the yearly maintenance on the chimney and woodstove ..

Bulbous things coming in for me are: dahlias, cannas, callas, glads, acidenthera and ismene. Not bringinging in tuberous begonias cuz they're cheap like borsch at Costco in the spring. Plants coming in are spiders and english ivy. Plants out of containers and into the ground: are snaps, foxglove, and a funky sedum joannabanana gave me that's probably not hardy here but why not. Whew am I done yet? oh ya and at some point I have to plant my new lilys and allium. ok I need a nap already.

Dahlianut,

What funky sedum? What does it look like? I think all the sedum that I have is hardy unless I have forgotten about one

It's a green ground cover with a red edge and not a trailer. Duh! I didn't write down the name. I thought you gave it to me from your greenhouse.

you can say that again LOL

I have no idea. Now I have to walk around my garden & try to find it.

How about a picture?

I got energetic and cleaned out all the containers today! Cool and intermittant rain this morning but the sun came out this afternoon and it is quite nice now.
This evening I am going to a home in Lower Mount Royal to try to ID al lthe plants for the new owner!

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

I've been too busy doing this to the dahlias. Note maybe Jo South's sedum has been covered in my new art deco 'f*r*o*s*t protection

My personal favorite is the 'ghost'. Too bad you can't ask kidlings into your garden anymore or I'd keep it for Hallowe'en.

oops sorry carol I will take a pic after the cold snap is over.

Thunder Bay Ontario, ON(Zone 3a)

WE GOT RAIN !!!! Not bunches of it .. but rain all the same .. temp at 6am was 57F .. so .. I think we'll have another muggy day here in Thunder Bay.. still too dark out to see if it's foggy again.

Dahlianut .. I love the look of your 'frost jackets' :-) I'm not going to cover anything anymore .. gonna let nature do its thang .. at this particular point in time .. we seem to be free of frost warnings for a bit .. I'll try the watering method should we get a hard frost .. seems to be effective ..

Take care all :-)

Spent my supper hour covering (and picking) and went back to the patch after 9 and picked some more (thank goodness we were able to use the car headlights and huge flashlights). We picked a plastic 20 gallon garbage can worth of peppers , as well as 20 pumpkins, and a number of arm breaking loads of tomatoes. Frost didn't come again but I'm glad we have cleared a good amount out of the patches....will also be donating a nice amount of fresh produce to the Salvation Army.

I planted a large variety of peppers and tomatoes (and this was the year for growing them, I've never seen either this loaded before). I wanted to be able to sample them all but we sure don't need "all". Am praying my university broke son, or one of his starving (we are talking young men here ;) roommates, comes down to Moose Jaw soon. We would be able to keep them in food (and Salsas) for a looooooooooooooong time.

Got lots of taters, cucumbers, and onions as well.

(edited post because DH looked at the above and said it was a 20 gallon pail plus a number of pillow cases that we filled full of peppers). I need more sleep. :S

p.s. I can barely lift my arms up to the keyboard this am.

Off now to get those arms moving and make a mango and tomato salsa with 5 different coloured peppers (black, red, green, orange and cream) and 5 different coloured tomatoes. :^)))

Looks like a sedum sieboldii to me. Clump forming maybe?

-1 here last night although apparently some parts of the province as low as -4.
The remaining annuals in my yard are toast but not any big deal as I had already emptied my containers. Everything else still looks fine.
Still carrots in the veggie garden but everything else is dug or eaten.

I moved a bunch of tropicals to their winter home - the school atrium. The Castor Bean suffered a bit, even with a frost blanket.

Lesley, Not sure of the name, but yes I had no problems over wintering it.

I covered most of my tender stuff last night, but I still lost my main dahlia patch in the middle of my garden for some reason and also my cannas. I don't think those frost blankies were enough; wish I'd used sheets for the dahlias. Still have lots of annuals in bloom though...I didn't notice it when I left for work in the dark this morning, but my DH told me our birdbath was quite frozen...

WHEW !! Seems we have skated through another frost warning here in Thunder Bay .. was supposed to dip below 32F and when I got up before 5am it was 43F. Mind you .. the temp will fall before the sun rises .. but I think it'll stay at 40 or above ...
Can't take the Kale or turnips from the garden until they get a good hard frost .. otherwise there are just a few carrots left.

Enjoy your day
