'hibiscus sabdariffa' rosella seeds are not germinating! why

Beverly Hills, CA

if you don't know what they are, you can google it. it is called different names in different regions.

They are also known as jamaica to mexicans.

anyway, i have some seeds that are about 3 years old. I planted all of them in the soil in July and august, none of them is germinating!

I don't know why. anyone knows?

They might be too old. Some seeds can still germinate after a number of years, but in general you're best off trying to use them within the first year. The conditions they were stored in during those three years are also important--if they were in an area that gets too hot or too cold that could shorten the amount of time they'd be viable. Then of course there's all the normal things that can go on with seed starting--if they're outdoors maybe a bird or critter got them, or maybe the temperatures haven't been right for them to germinate, or they were planted too deep, or they were kept too wet and rotted, etc.

so i planted all the seeds that I got, and i got some dried seeds that they sell in the store, and finally! one seed germinated! i am not sure which one, the ones that I gathered, or the ones that I got from the store. It is tiny, i hope that it will survive.

Give the others time. Did you research to see if these seeds needed to have a cold chill for a bit before sowing.

Coingtras on one baby and may ya have many more! : )

the plant is fairly tropical so I'd be surprised if they needed cold treatment.
