My First Egg!!!!!!!!!!

San Bruno, CA

I'm so excited I can hardly stand it. I went to do a bit of doctoring in the dark because one of my ladies had a drop of blood on her beak, and what should I find but a little present waiting for me. And where was it layed you might ask? My genious chicken got it in the nesting box on her first try. Not that long ago I put two flower pots in the nesting box to prevent all four girls from sleeping in there together. They go used to sleeping on the perch, and two nights ago I started thinking the time was close, so I took one of the pots out (one had not originally been enough to force them out) and voila....a present for me. Now the question remains who layed it. I have one Blue Andalusian, one Amauracauna, one Black Jersey Giant, and one Marans. The first two are out because of egg color, and I have a difficult time believing that the first egg came from the exactly 5 months old Jersey Giant, so could it be Schnitzel the Marans egg? Catscan, it it time for Schnitzel to start laying? I'm not sure of her exact age. And could her first egg be light brown? It has a brown smudge on it, but I can't tell if it is pigment or blood.

I'm so happy I could cry......

I am so excited too! According to my notes, Schnitzel aka "Pip" hatched the 29th of April--which makes her about 4 months or 17 weeks old. A little young to be laying. Schnitzel came from a dark brown egg--although not the darkest in the Marans' grading system--so I assume she would have a bit darker eggs. I am thinking the Jersey Giant is a better bet. The age is right and the color too. My Marans, Brie, lays dark brown eggs with speckles. Hers are not the darkest either--but they are not light brown.

How big is it?

The egg was pretty small. Does anyone have experience with Jersey Giants? 5 months seems early for such a big late-maturing bird. Should I be concerned? The lady who I got her from said they could start laying anytime between 5 and 6 months, but that she had never had one start on the short end. Demerow says it can be hard on a bird to start laying early as their system is not yet quite ready. I was sure the first egg would come from the Blue Andalusian as I read that they are "early maturing." Thanks for the info.

Thanks so much everyone. I'm sure you will have eggs soon MollyD. This is so much more exciting then I thought it would be. It's like thinking that every morning might be Christmas, I just have to go to the coop to check. I can't imagine how it will be when all four start laying.
I haven't had another egg yet, but last night someone visited the nesting box and made a depression, so I'm thinking soon. Yay!!
