It's some form of Cotinus coggygria...aka Smoke Tree/Smoke Bush

There are a number of different cultivars so it may look different than the one(s) she's familiar with, or if it didn't bloom this year maybe that's what made her think it was something different.

My vote is is smokebush. If it was trimmed at the wrong time, the bloom will be delayed or not at all.
