Help. we ran into this ugly looking spider at Natural Bridge Park in Kentucky. Can anyone tell me what type of spider it is? It had a web built in the base of a tree that had an opening.
CLOSED: What Is This Gross Looking Spider?
This appears to be a nursery web/fishing spider (family Pisauridae). The female carries her egg sac about with her chelicerae ('fangs') - see http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2245/2153507041_e405529c53.jpg?v=0, whereas their close relatives, wolf spiders, carry their about at the end of their abdomen - see http://entomology.unl.edu/images/spiders/lycosa_hell2.jpg.
Large specimens can deliver a painful bite if mishandled, but are not dangerous to humans.
