We found 3 of these in our screen tent this morning. Does this mean there is a nest somewhere? What is it? Where would we look for a nest?
CLOSED: Large Bee/Wasp?
I forgot to add, they are about 3-4 inches long. very big buggies!
That is a cicada killer and here is more information about it. http://www.whatsthatbug.com/killerwasps.html
They won't bother you unless you bother them (only the females sting), but should they decide you are a threat, that stinger really, really hurts.
There isn't a big nest. They work individually, and have individual nests - a hole in the ground. The males cause concern because they are territorial and fly around trying to chase other males off. But they don't sting. The female just goes about her work trying to locate cicadas to provision her nest.
WOW.. so hopefully I didn't kill them.. there was 3 of them in my screened in tent.. I closed up the tent this am when I saw them.. dh is very allergic to bees and I didn't/couldn't take the chance.
Maybe tomorrow I will open up the 4 doorways and hopefully they are still alive and can escape.. the cecadas are deafening!
Thanks for the link.. very interesting.
