CLOSED: Odd spider

We found this rather large spider in our front yard in Western MA on Sept 2, 2008. What is it? Is it dangerous? It had made a large classic web and was hiding under our hummingbird feeder.

This is another orb-weaving spider (family Araneidae), possibly in the genus Araneus. They all are harmless to humans.
