that looks more like a soft scale to me than a true mealybug. i would spray with something like a summerweight oil or neem to smother them.

WEird is only 2-3 branches affected... all the rest totally clean (that I can tell).. .so I just cut these ones off.

This one sent me to the books, and I came back empty handed. Do you still have them? I think you should send them to USC at Davis for an ID. Perhaps just sending the photo will be enough (it's a great photo!). I sure would like to know what these are!! Purdy please...

when i first saw this picture, it reminded me of a soft scale that i encountered in the florida keys. an extension agent came out and identified it as genus Philephedra. i have the species too but the info is buried somewhere in my plant files. anyway, i did some googling and found a similar picture, though not exact. the funny thing is that the man who collected this new species (L. Howerton) is the same man that came to my house in tavernier. he is very knowledgable and although he is in florida, if you sent him this picture, he may well know what it is. it's worth a try. http://images.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://www.doacs.state.fl.us/pi/enpp/ento/images/coccoidea_coccidae_Fig_1_web.jpg&imgrefurl=http://www.doacs.state.fl.us/pi/enpp/ento/coccoidea_coccidae.html&h=268&w=400&sz=63&hl=en&start=1&usg=__ecxaZUTlYPeMrazPYNW-k_cXWqk=&tbnid=wQ5btbaem3W2UM:&tbnh=83&tbnw=124&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dflorida%2Bpalm%2Bscale%26gbv%3D2%26hl%3Den%26sa%3DG
