CLOSED: help! what is this?

Forest Hill, MD

We have had a few of these flying around, I am sorry for the poor pictures, but it does not stay stilll for long, going from flower to flower. The thing is pretty big, the first part is of its back side while in my petunia. The second part is on the side. Would be great to know what it is. Thanks for our help! Really interesting site!

it could be a spinx moth or a hummingbird moth. Pictures a little grainy.

Maybe the Clearwing Moth?? http://davesgarden.com/guides/bf/go/5140/

As you can see, with this picture you're not going to get an accurate id.
I'd suggest contacting your local extension office, & find some good
picture references. Don't give up - it's worth knowing what you're encountering.

This does appear to be one of the clear-winged sphinx moths in the genus Hemaris - see http://www.pbase.com/tmurray74/image/32115630 and http://www.pbase.com/tmurray74/image/27606554 for examples.

well, I had to get one right eventually. I love those moths the kids name ours and look forward to dusk to see them eat.
